Oh my god! The worlds going to end, some torrent sites have closed down! Alternatives

Don't panic just yet, torrents will be around in one shape or form for at least the next week.

Mininova was born from the ashes of Suprnova, which was the daddy site if you were selling copies of pirate films, Im talking the days of £10 for a copy of Star Wars The Phantom Menace on VHS from a bloke in the pub.

Theres a big old list of torrents somewhere in the computer section so if you cant find that to get by then torrents aint really for you anyway.

Theres a few alternatives around to torrents which work roughly on the same principal, i.e you can steal your favourite new movies for free or some for a small member ship fee. Ive used a fair few of them so Ill do my best to come up with some alternatives for "the sky is falling!" crowd.

It will just go back to people uploading them to rapidshare and megaupload.

As DD said theres sites such as Rapidshare, megaupload and loads of others.

There are sites that will just search them for files such as

Rapidshare-search-engine.com - Find files on rapidshare

    http://www.dir.im

Theyre best if you know what you're looking for rather than browsing as the search results can be a bit messy. Also for anything like movies you're most likely to be downloading a collection of .rar files one by one. Ok for music as it will be one .rar but movies can be 20+ which you need to download individually, not the best for anyone who's used to torrents.

DC++ is another option, used this for a while myself to dig out some rarer stuff. It's works by connecting to a "hublist" which is a list of groups, some public some are private or have requirements like having x amount of stuff to share.

These are great for finding lots of stuff, some groups will be dedicated to a subject like music or movies, some are general covering everything from software to clipart. You join a group thn do a search and it list the results, the files are then downloaded directly from the other persons "share" folder on their computer so speeds are dependant on their upload connexion and whether anyone else is downloading the same file

this is primarily for windows but there are mac versions out there although not many

DC++ your files, your way, no limits

It looks like the era of big public trackers is coming to an end.

It's not a question of will there be file sharing, it's more about access and ease of use. I was mainly a demonoid user, and the value of these sites was the extraordinary range of content indexed and searchable under one roof. Plus, there were strong trading communities centered around specific movie & music genres, etc.

Private trackers are OK, there's a couple I've been a member of for a long time, but it's more hit and miss. Also, I find it hard to maintain a good ratio in a small community.

You should be able to play that with VLC player still, though it may glitch a little bit.

Usenet is a good alternative to Torrent. I find it very reliable, excellent speeds, also you can use SSL to encrypt the downloads so your ISP can't tell what your download. Stops about "traffic shaping" or ISPS tracing your downloads. Also GrabIt! (The program that does the downloading) automatically repairs, unrars/zips your files and then deletes the rars/zips automatically which saves any hassle.

It costs a little bit and theres a couple of things to setup to get it working perfect but it's worth the hassle. Although most of the sites are private I've got a few invites going spare.

I did try to post a link to a site which explains it all, but apprantly I need five. Best get posting!

yep, USENET is the way to go, very fast download, used to download at 1MB/sec compared to your average 200kb/sec on torrents

not sure if alt.bin.boneless is still active, but there were a lot of stuff to go through

there are also some search engines for NZB files, that is a "torrent" like file that will download for you at the right alt.bin locations

key is retention, I am a subscriber to one with more than 150d

I think with Usenet you get what you pay for! The amount of downloading I do it pays for itself. I use Astraweb and find them to be decent. $15 a month unlimited I think.

I'm on a 50mb connection here and I always find myself hitting good speeds, plus no traffic shaping from my pesky ISP!

I really like v3.newzbin for searching.

For those using Rapidshare, this utility is great. Just load up the files you want to DL and it does it all for you.

Universal Share Downloader - Dimonius page

It's in Romanian, but the DL link for the 7.2Mb file is what you need. It installs in English or a range of dead languages like French.

I know you aren't too bright Marmitte, but downloading from some Romanian website some exe full of trojans, is really asking for trouble
