i am so impressed by the enormous range of free applications available and the ready installed ones.
i'm going to have a play with GIMP later.
looks identical to photoshop.
cool.
where's that application where you can see several screens at once?
To be truthful I can't remember. It might already installed, have you got "Advanced desktop effects settings" app???Originally Posted by ChiangMai noon

That's the compiz 3D effects I'm talking about.Originally Posted by ChiangMai noon
Look under settings for "Desktop Effects", turn on "Custom Effects" then run "Advanced desktop effects settings"
If it doesn't work you might have to fiddle with your nvidia driver.
have to go to work in a minute and put up with that nasty windows shit.
I think that now my XP is running fast and smooth it'd be pretty stupid of me to fuck it all up with ubuntu, especially since every other post on this thread is CMN saying how do I do that? or I can only seem to do that if I switch back to Windows...
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.
that was only for 1 problem.Originally Posted by benbaaa

Have a look here Ubuntu:Hardy -
and if you need to sort out drivers as well Ubuntu:Hardy -
I'll have a go when i get home this evening.
why isn't skype available in my programe manager.
is it not available on this version of linux?
You can try GNU/Linux without fucking anything on your computer by simply booting on a LiveCD.
1. You will know if your hardware is compatible.
2. If you don't like it just reboot, take off the CD and you will be on XP again.
Overview: Mandriva Linux One | Mandriva
The Mandriva One download page: Download | Mandriva
Coz it's a non-free software.
Get it from here, download the Ubuntu package and install it.
Download Skype for Linux
Farkinell, it doesn't come with Skype preinstalled?Originally Posted by ChiangMai noon
Maybe you have to download it?
Like you have to when you run Windows.
everything else i wanted was pre-installed though.Originally Posted by lom

Otherwise they would have included it...
You mean .png isn't it ?
A simple way to convert is the command line. Open a console and type:
"convert" is one of the commands provided by the ImageMagick package. ImageMagick is a suite, consisting of various tools--display, and should be installed by default in Ubuntu.Code:$ convert image.png image.jpg
will display your pic (also an ImageMagick) command.Code:display image.png
Or simply launch gthumb( GTHUMB ) and then -> Tools -> Convert.
CMN if you want to go for a 3D desktop you will have to update your graphics card drivers. Currently you have open source generic drivers.
The update should be very simple in this case however. On the upper right hand side of your desktop on your top pannel are a series of icons. One looks a little bit like a graphics card. I think this will update to non open source graphics drivers for you.
In the same area is a red arrow this is for updates. You might want to explore both.
On another note exactly how useful is the 3D desktop or is it just a gimic?
For me it just speeds up the refresh of the desktop, so you get a smoother movement of windows and real transparency. Don't actually use the 3d bits very much. You can also zoom in and out which is useful for porn viewing. There are a few other little features which are useful for organising if you have many windows over several desktops.Originally Posted by Jardine
