I dont know why some of these camera companies dont come up with a way of naming the pics as you shoot so instead of getting 002-234-655.jpg or whatever you just enter the text in the camera and they output as holiday-01.jpg, maybe some do but not on my poxy camera anyway.

Until that happens you'll just end up with a load of meaningless numbered photo's in a folder which need renaming, plenty of apps out there to do it already but this ones free so it gets a mention.

If you watch the video on the site its got a neat trick in the image browser. If you re-arrange the pics to a different order than they are already they get renamed to the position they move to, i.e move the 3rd picture to being the 1st and it gets renamed from pic_03 to pic_01

Most brand name cameras do - you set it in the preferences.

Happy Dim Sum Lucky Camera Co. brand might not have this feature, though.

I have a lot of problems keeping track of which browser I bookmarked something in so heres a few apps Im trying out at the moment.

AllBookmarks is free and comes from the makers of one of my cant live without apps, 1Passwd. It sits in the menu bar and gives you access to all the bookmarks in your browsers through a list.

Bookdog is a bit different as it imports/exports the bookmarks directly to the browsers so you can send your Safari bookmarks to Firefox/Camino and vice versa.

Ive been using Safari 4 as its out of BETA now and Im pretty impressed, if my net connection wasnt so fecked up at the moment I could give it a go for a while and see how it compares to FF.

Well I must say Im pretty impressed with Safari 4, its a hell of a lot faster than Firefox. It has Cover Flow for history so you can easily navigate back to that porn video you were watching and generally feels pretty sleek.

Theres only a few things I miss from Firefox but for everyday surfing its Safari from now on, I actually feel like Im getting the full speed out of my connection for a change.

One thing I noticed using Safari is it will open certain links in a new window, not a tab. If you want all links to open in a new tab the open up the Terminal (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and enter this line of code

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true

The restart safari. If you want to reverse it back use this code

defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool false

Restart Safari for the change to take place.

Ive always had a problem with Leopard using the "Aqua" look for scroll bars and just plain forgot about this until the other day. You can have the same scroll bars that you get in the newer iTunes versions like this



rather than those aqua blue ones that stick out like a sore thumb. Its not difficult to do but does mean drilling down through a lot of folders to get to the right place to change them.

Ive tried looking for the link to the file that I got but its nowhere to be found so if anyone wants to change to the iTunes scrollers let me know and I'll upload them somewhere or email them to anyone who wants them

Been poking around with Safari and as it seems with todays browsers they love to eat up RAM. Safari seems to be using the same amount as FF so its nothing new, there are a few features missing from Safari that you get in FF like saving tabs if it crashes etc so there an app called Glims

which adds a load of optional stuff to Safari. I think this is what might be making it use more RAM, the same as add ons do sometimes in FF.

I used to do that all the while, but would rather have it done for me. Copying 1 line of code into Terminal isnt that difficult.

This might seem a bit daft to some people, you want to delete some text so you hit the delete key. I use a laptop which only has one delete key, desktop keyboards tend to have more.

So what if you want to delete forwards, whole words or lines?

By using these keys combined with the delete key you can do just that

Delete + Key..................................... Action
Delete .........Removes one character to the left of the insertion point
fn Delete ........Removes one character to the right of the insertion point
Option Delete .......Removes one word to the left of the insertion point
Option fn Delete ......Removes one word to the right of the insertion point
Command Delete .....Removes one line to the left of the insertion point

Command is the ⌘ key
Option is the ⌥ key

This might not work in every app/text box/document you come across but should work in plenty of them

How many times have you clicked on an apps name in the menu bar to go to preferences and glanced at the "Services" menu and thought, what the hell does it do?

Its quite a powerful set of tools under the right circumstances as it sort of links apps together. If you have some new app installed and it can perform actions through the Services menu it will add itself to it.

Skype is an example, if you have it installed go to Services and look for Skype, it will have options of things to do like add contact/call etc but they will be greyed out and unusable. This is because Services works by using/manipulating highlighted text (and certain files), so for example someone emails you their phone number such as +441234567890, if you highlight the number and the plus sign with Skype open, go to Services/Skype the options will now appear in black and ready to use. If you click "call" then that number will get sent to Skype and called.

I dont use Services very often for Skype, it was just an example. Where it really shines is if you do a lot of typing/text based stuff. Maybe you have a blog, write content for websites, typing out a CV, letters to the bank or typing out an excruciatingly long post on Teakdoor only to find you've left the CAPS LOCK ON.

This is where I find Wordservice a big help

It can be a real pain deleting and re-typing a wordy post so with Wordservice installed all you do is highlight the text, go to services/convert/Lowercase and hey presto all the highlighted text is now lowercase.

Theres loads of other useful things like being able to make every first letter of a sentence upper case, Make Every First Letter Of A Word Uppercase, a word/ character/line count handy if you make a lot of text based documents.

Just remember that Services works when something is highlighted and you might start to make use of it a bit more often.

This just adds that functionality to Cocoa (just?) apps. You can highlight the text and send it to a word processor as well rather than copy/paste etc.
