iPhone thread. Tips, apps and stuff

Due to the runaway failure of my general phone thread (i.e I cant be arsed with it) Ive decided to do one just on the iPhone as Ill probably update this one a bit more often.

I try out quite a few apps and to be honest it can be a real pain sorting the good from the bad as theres so may of them available, most are free but some are worth paying for.

The links to apps will be a link to the iTunes store so theyll open a new tab/window then open iTunes automatically or you'll need to open iTunes and search for them that way.

OK, first app and I dont want to peak too early so this could be useful to a few but probably not all.

Reqall is a memory jogger/GTD (get things done) app, theres a few around but as this was free I decided to give it a go and sort of stuck with it. The thing that makes this different is its able to take notes, make appointments, reminders etc by voice so for example you just say "dentist 24th February" and it will enter it into the app. It does quite well in converting speech to text but nothings perfect so it might make the odd mistake if you dont speak clearly or have a funny accent, it copes with mine OK so its worth a look as its free. Theres also an account you can access through a browser which syncs automatically with the phone (and vice versa) so you can just add the stuff you want from your computer.

You can choose to have a daily reminder sent by email which is handy as I tend to check my emails and forget to check the app, how ironic.

this is a link to the website

    reQall

this is a link to the app in the app store

I can be pretty forgetful at times and even though it takes a bit of getting used to the app its been more help than hassle.

you should do a review on the new Google gadget, might be a better alternative than the iPhone eventually

Could be a bit tricky as I dont have one Butters, you know what they say about imitation and flattery.

Anyway back to the guff. As I mentioned my iPhone is a jailbreak one and after I did it I found out that I couldnt use Skype anymore, I think theres a workaround but I ended up trying an app called Truphone. This isnt iPhone exclusive, it works on Android, Blackberry and a couple of others. I stuck with it as you can top up in smaller amounts than Skype (min £10+vat if you dont know how to skip the VAT charge) minimum top up is £5, it can do VOIP calls over 3G rather than having to use WiFi for Skype and its got an instant messaging client that connects to Skype, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and AIM contacts.

One of my mates has got an app that turns your iPhone into a mini leaf blower. Completely useless apart from maybe cleaning the dust from between keys on your keyboard but kinda cleaver I thought, how they have used a certain frequency sent through the speaker to create a constant air flow.

He's also got one that is supposed to get rid of mozzies but it doesn't do the trick.

Joby, makers of the popular Gorillapods, has released a free camera app for the iPhone titled "gorillacam."[at] The free application allows for faster continuous shooting (1.6 fps) than the original iPhone camera application and also includes a self-time, 3-shot burst, grid overlay, time-lapse capability and the ability to share your photos without ever leaving the application.

Self-timer takes timed photos. Perfect for group shots and self-portraits. Works best with the help of the Gorillamobile for 3G/3GS.

Unlimited rapid-fire takes up to 1.6 photos per second. Just press and hold the shutter to take as many photos as you want at super high speed.[at]

3-Shot burst takes three quick photographs with one tap. Never miss a second of the action. Plus, no more photos ruined when someone blinks![at]

Grid overlay takes your photography to the next level. Create more interesting photographs using the rule of thirds in your composition. Also great for lining up horizons or buildings.

Share photos without ever leaving the app.[at]

Time-lapse takes multiple photos spaced at an interval. Take photos as fast as 1 second apart, or up to 2 minutes apart.[at]

Auto-save lets you keep shooting while your photos save in the background. No more waiting between shots. Snap away, uninterrupted.[at]

Press anywhere turns the whole screen into the shutter button. Photograph yourself with ease![at]

Bubble level takes steady, level shots every time. Works both vertically and horizontally. Great for shots of horizons, landscapes and more.

I ponced all that from a blog as it explains the features pretty well. The iPhone camera could do with a few extra features and this adds enough for my minimal snapping. It's a freebie btw

Don't do what I did. Paid for a wind speed app which I read about and it said it was for the ipod touch and iphone. Well, it works on the amount of wind noise blowing over the speaker so is useless on my touch....99c down the drain...Works well apparently.

One app you must have is the star wars light sabre. Great fun, totally useless but good for challenging other users on long commutes on public transport etc

I have a fishing game where you have to hold the ipod and "cast" the line out. Very cool and the kids love it but I'm always nervous one of his more energetic casts will result in my ipod flying across the room into a wall.

I'm lost with out the backgammon app. Can squeeze three quick games in while on the bog. Great to get the brain whirling in the morning while the coffee kicks in.

Pandora - free music player/Radio. Basically put in the artist and plays music by them and other similar artists.

I'm sticking with the photo stuff for now as there's a few apps that will link together so you can take, edit, resize, upload and share photos

Theres a fair few editing apps around but I use this one

    PS mobile iTunes Store

PS mobile is Photoshop mobile, yep the Adobe one and it's free. There's a few filters, effects and you can crop as well, don't expect to be greeted with Photoshop like on a computer or you'll be disappointed. You can upload and share photos within the app but I think it's a pay service so I use something else for that which I'll post later

Ok, you've taken your pic, messed around with it in PSmobile now you need/want to resize it.

This rather unimaginatively named app should do the job

    Resizer iTunes Store

It resized the photo by making a duplicate in the new size

^ no idea what's happened to that app, seems to have vanished. I must have been one of the lucky few to grab it.
