    (Groan) computer slowed down

I know this is the oldest problem in the book, but my computer has slowed right down. Especially Youtube.

I have an Dell Inspion laptop running XP.

I ran a speed test and the connection seems ok, so I guess it's something internal.
I have run defragged twice, run CCleaner, AVG, Malwarebytes, and Advanced System Care, and it's still the same.

Can someone please suggest something else ? I'm in pain.

youtube, facebook etc are always making their webpages more advanced and stop supporting old platforms. With the news that Microsoft is stopping support for XP, the websites will as well. Time for a new puter mate.

Oh....heaps of people are still using XP, and my problem only happened fairly suddenly in the last few days.

Hardly any extensions. And the cache was cleaned/deleted by CCleaner...

My preferred browser is Firefox, but Chrome is very slow to load.

I have to go out now; I'll continue the pain tomorrow. Meanwhile, any suggestions welcome.

Does you computer have more than 2gb of RAM?

If so have a look at windows 7.

If you're in Thailand I'd be happy to post you a copy.

    you forgot to valve it

this will be a overloaded processor problem - you have something running that is consuming alot of your CPU

ctrl-alt-del and look at the CPU % used by what processes while you are loading/rendering some youtube dross

To expand on what Baldrick said, open Task Manager and sort by CPU usage, then keep it in view and do what's running slow.

See what's using the most Processor while that's happening.

Also take a look at disk I/O.

Been involved with computers since the late 70's. In all that time, inevitably, one gets a sense of and collects the most useful tools.

    Here's my top choice.

could try Process lasso , it stops background progs hogging the resources by throttles um if they get too greedy
, most effective when using a low powered computer, I used to use it on a 1 gb ram netbook windows 7 starter, and it made it run nice and smoothly and stopped periodic freezing.

    free version
    download 32 or 64
Process Lasso - Automate and optimize priorities, CPU affinities, power profiles, and much more!

could also try cc cleaners / tools / start up - and make sure ther'es not a load of crap starting with the computer .
    Then restart computer

Now THIS is interesting. Thanks, Blue !

I appreciate the suggestions from all you other dudes. Until a coupla days ago it was ok, so I'll keep my oldish Dell with Xp for the moment. It has heaps of space on the hard drive and 2 g of ram.

And I'll do as suggested and see what is hogging the CPU....when I have time. Currently I'm working long hours.

Ok....I think I have located the problem, but the solution does not seem to be working.

The Process Lasso program revealed that a process called "svchost" was using most of my CPU. But the solution, from here

How to Fix svchost.exe using 100% CPU / Memory Leak - Technibble

did not fix it......though it is better.

Basically, you download 3 files, then restart your computer in Safe Mode and open/install them, then reboot.

(And incidentally, for BenBaa's benefit, you will need to find the file "fix_svchost.bat" elsewhere, as the link on the above page reveals text only).

Previously, svchost was shown in Process Lasso under "Active Processes", and using a huge amount of processing power, but not now. It is shown under "all processes", and the percentage of my CPU it uses is shown as low.

But the bloody laptop is still slow.

Sounds like you have tried everything ..maybe its just getting old and something is failing like the hard drive . .

    Is the laptop overheating ?
or maybe drivers or windows need updating or
could try Systems Restore , back to a point the computer was working ok .

check your host file in windows/System32/etc/drivers directory, some silly anti-spyware will fill that file with dummy address against spam and spyware,

if there is a ton of lines in that file, then it's the reason behind those 100% CPU hog

Windows can't manage that many addresses in the Host file and will hang because of it

I think you're bunged up with Malware

Did you valve your PC into safe mode then run malware bytes, with your other security software disabled ?
