Norts, you hacked my plans.. that's more or less it with two indoor looms and without the fancy log cabin effect.

I've told her indoors that we'll need a separate small dog house for when i get to the addled stage where i wake and see her in bed and go "who the hell are you"...

Wow...long time away! (sorry bout dat)

A few updates, main one being...he's started the floor finishing now.

    Window update

Living room upstrairs in zone 2 - you can make out the slight green tint to the glass

Master bedroom - can hardly see the tint in this picture - mind you I did not want solid leaf green and cant see anything in the right colour.

It's more like a sort of 'polarising' effect

You can see the effect better when 2 windows are back-to-back

I dream of waking up in a bed... last 2 weeks I have been waking at 3am on the sofa and the TV has a different movie on...

...of course I only work that out after 5 minutes of trying to make the new scenes fit with the ones I was watching 'only minutes ago'....

A very good choice, tinted glass. There's not only the slight heat reduction, but there is also a psychological effect of coolness.

    Internal Doors

You saw the first one, which K.Pot got from Thaiwasadu....

This was a slightly smaller size, but was the right size for the WC doors and the right pattern.

PJ then ordered all the doors direct from the saw mill who provided the dragon doors:

Very sharp detailing on the 'carving'

we ordered the en-suite bathroom doors at the same time

...and he's started fitting them too, this is the one into the office.

I thought he would stain them all BEFORE hanging them but as you can see.. no.

They will all match the door frames / windows when finished though.

    Lovely, Dhupp!
    The door wood is.....??

Make sure that the stain colour is not too dark - a lighter hue compliments the surroundings better [personal opinion].

    Looking nice.

    Thanks for that...

I will have to check that wood, HL.. obviously its not Mae Daeng. - its not dark enough.. its Mae somethink though!

I know it needs anti termite treatment first, which K.Pot has already organised.

Yeah will have to assess the colour for the doors once hes done the first coat.

Funny... if in UK, I might well be going for the light colour it currently has...

Every light color timber and its varnishes (except the real natural shellac - "french polish") will get darker with time...

    TD: just a small remark:
perhaps in Chonburi - with not so deep woods - they speak differently about a wood. I know that in Thai it is ไม้ , transcripted mai or mi , pronounced similarly as you say "My Princess".

Mae would be more suitable for Mae Baan (BTW, how many of them have you already conscripted for TD Towers?)

    Hey Klondyke... how's it going?!

So... that Mae Daeng spelling... I got it, i think from a very informative post on the forum which described all the different woods, and that's also the wayt K.Pot told to PJ..

Hopefully we all know what i mean anyway....!

You are the wood expert, so.... what wood do you think my doors are made out of?

Hi TD, I would not classify myself as a "wood expert", nor a clairvoyant. Anyway, the doors look good. Not to forget on keeping a sufficient gap to the frame that you will be able to open/close them in the rainy season.

^I do not think, ash has quite a strong visible texture, few examples of ash (US):

No absolute for the broad range of ash wood.

    Temperate ash
    Alpine ash
    Tropical ash

    Hard/soft varieties. Worldwide.

^Yes, I agree. There are so many different mutations of the same species once grown in other side of the world. Just yesterday I was browsing thru GH, seeing a number of cheap doors by different timbers, some under 2,000 Baht, however, of a good quality, the species not so easily to determine. The Chinese have so many different kinds of wood, beside of the huge volume they are importing from USA.

Hard to say with any definiteness what wood is what from photos, with a few notable exceptions such as coconut and knotty pine. Smell can be important, as can actually hearing/feeling the hardness.

This is true. My guitar, made by the master Luthier K. Yairi got the wood it was made from from China. Burled mahogany front and I forget what the other componant woods are.

    Flooring update

    Morning all!!

Here are some pictures from the ongoing floor sanding.

    Living room...

It's a slow and steady job. good to see the operator wearing a dust mask. hardwood dust is carcinogenic

It's come up quite well - will look even better once it has the final finishing work.

    Master bedroom.
    ...

Yes, the sanding is very slow and very dusty. That's why I did not have fine sanded my acacia floor in bedroom after the laying, just glued in pre-sanded and pre-polished lacquered acacia parquets (10mm thick) directly on concrete floor. After 12 years still hasn't eated by ปลวก (pluak - termites):

    Window frame colour matching

K.Pot did the early colour but returned to get a better match tween the frames, shutters and wall...

Almost finished this now and I am happy with the effort to match up the colour....

Ah TD thank goodness, the voice of sanity in this madhouse.

Floors are going to look great as long as the bloke who's been knicker stealing doesn't get arrested before he's finished sanding and i hope you get his footprints out.

And a fine job it is.

Replicating traditional Thai house windows whilst accommodating aircon space complicates things. With windows/shutters open how are insects kept out? Unless I am missing something no screens in sight.
