Including (as happened to a friend of mine) being heli-lifted to a hospital from Lamma Island. Free. My mother has diabetes, and osteo-sclerosis. The government health care she receives in Oz is just excellent. Hell, she even supplies me with painkillers (for my hangovers) cus she gets them for free.

Should point out something though. With our aging populations, the issue of keeping the cost of health care in check is not unique to the USA. But our problem is so much less than theirs- we spend 50-65% what the US does, and frankly the coverage offered all citizens is so much better.

GPs all over the place, inexpensive or even free, bulk billing . . . of course the waiting time starts at zero and extends to however many people happen to be there at any given time.

Is it a perfect system? Hardly. Is it better than most? Absolutely.

Yeh, I Freeloaded a few paracetamols & Ibuprofens (for Gout) from dear Mum when I lived on Oz for 3 years, before moving to Thailand. You see, I couldn't be bothered signing on to Medicare, as is my entitlement as an Oz citizen- I still had private health care cover from my HK company anyway. Oh and I freeloaded some stuff to help stop smoking (didn't work) from my sister too, who is a GP and gets all sorts of free samples from the Pharma's, including nice junkets to holiday resorts. Makes ya sick then does it?

Hardly matters here in Thailand, pharma's are so damn cheap anyway.

But, back to the point, where are these three month waits for Doctors? I've never known any, and between UK, Oz & HK thats about 44 years of my life covered. Did I miss something? The standard of state health care my mother receives in Oz is nothing short of excellent, and with diabetes and osteo that amounts to quite a lot. They chuck you out of private healthcare policies for that in the USA.

As for diabetes, so many folks in Canada have type 2, but they'd rather take meds than sort out their diets and lifestyles.

I didn't mean to get so snippy, SB, but in so many ways, the safety net/nanny state scenario is wrong to me. Sure, if free funding was used only by those in real need, it would be fine, but so many abuse it. Pshaw, why take care of myself or even work -- the govt owes me just for being a citizen. My work ethics and morals don't allow me to sponge off others. And how much control does the govt then have over your lives if they take care of all these issues? There are many folks everyday who are sidetracked for "elective" surgery in Canada -- you know, gall stones, hip replacements, cancer treatments, etc. Hey, if you are not at death's door, you can handle the pain for another six months. And it is true that the elderly are last in line for "elective" ops. (Hmm, treat those that will go back to work and pay taxes.)

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- In what is shaping up to be one of the more effective boycott campaigns in years, advertisers are abandoning the "Glenn Beck" show on Fox News following the host's incendiary comments that President Barack Obama is a "racist" and has a "deep-seated hatred for white people."

Sorry sabang NHS is rubbish. Always has been especially when you are old - they dont give a fuck, rather see you die then spend the dosh.

Far as Glenn Beck - didnt he work for CNN prior to Fox? Any rate - don't take him serious he acts the way he does to make a point in an extreme fashion. Entertaining to watch, but doubt he is taken seriously.

    Glenn Beck,…………

During the first (maybe 4 minuets) part of this show (link),……….Glenn Beck is praising the US Health Care System (while working for FOX) but just 16 months ago he was critical of the US Health Care System (working for CNN).

What a tool,……….for the Republican Party.

^ He's an Independent, bebe. I can't watch your version of Jon. Will troll it on the Canuck network. Haven't much interest in Jon or Colbert lately -- did they change writers or just get more boring?

^ Colby used to be funny, but his show is getting kinda lame now. Rarely watch either these days, altho that Jon clip when he's trying to get BO to not say anything about the Gates issue and the police acted "stupidly" was pretty amusing. I'm glad to see they feel easier now clobbering both sides.

Beck touts himself as a Libertarian... I first started watching him when he was on CNN... He was much more moderate at that time and actually spoke to issues... So much so that I thought his departure from CNN just prior to the elections last year due to his 'on target' rhetoric... Once he surfaced on Fox, he is a different person, pandering to the ultra-right nutters... The crying on queue and the OTT commentary turned me off very quickly...
Give a man a match, and he'll be warm for a minute, but set him on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

It's very common. O'reilly claims to be independent.

Beck may have stated (as you say) that he's a Libertarian, but he's made many statements contrary to the Libertarian value/belief system.

Beck....is an entertainer. Period. He's not a political man. He's an entertainer who discusses politica, celebrity, and social issues.

Beck is a hired hack, plain and simple. Credibility- Zero.
He's been given a big pay rise by Fox to plug populist messages, aimed at the lowest possible denominator.
I suppose he's no worse a hired Ho than Britney Spears and their Ilk.

^ True, I wouldn't pin my life on his words, but he does start some good debates. That's his job -- make people question WTF is going on.
He was talking about Medal of Freedom recipients last week. When I heard Desmond Tutu was getting one I almost smashed my computer. That racist, vile slug dressed in preacher's garb? I saw him at a rally in Tokyo in the '80s and all he did was spew hatred against all whites. My Jap friends couldn't believe it -- a "holy" man saying that sh*t? They lost all credence for him then, not that they had much for him in the first place being a black. Nice pick, bambam.

Well, Beck will be happy with this poll!

According to Gallup, conservatives outnumber liberals in all 50 states.
In 2009, 40% percent of respondents in Gallup surveys that have interviewed more than 160,000 Americans have said that they are either "conservative" (31%) or "very conservative" (9%). That is the highest percentage in any year since 2004.
Only 21% have told Gallup they are liberal, including 16% who say they are "liberal" and 5% who say they are "very liberal."
Thirty-five percent of Americans say they are moderate.
Among these moderates, Comrade Obama's numbers have been plummeting.

    ^ "conservative" and "liberal."

Both are minorities within their respective parties. The Independents and the "Radical Center" win and lose elections.

The GOP has a long way to go if it wants to compete again nationally. The Repubs lost many demographic groups in the last elections. What we don't know is if this is a one-time event or the beginning of a trend.

I think it depends on what happens economically in the US and who the nominees are 3 years and 3 months from now.

Well, what else can explain why the White House smear machine is in overdrive:
Self-identified conservatives outnumber self-identified liberals in all 50 states of the union, according to the Gallup Poll.
At the same time, more Americans nationwide are saying this year that they are conservative than have made that claim in any of the last four years.
In 2009, 40% percent of respondents in Gallup surveys that have interviewed more than 160,000 Americans have said that they are either “conservative” (31%) or “very conservative” (9%). That is the highest percentage in any year since 2004.

Thirty-five percent of Americans say they are moderate.
During Republican President George W. Bush’s second term, the number of self-identified conservatives as measured by Gallup dropped, riding at a low of 37% as recently as last year.
According to new data released by Gallup on Friday, conservatives outnumber liberals in all 50 states–including President Obama’s home state of Illinois–even though Democrats have a significant advantage over Republicans in party identification in 30 states.

    and another one,.................

Already, twenty companies have agreed to pull advertisements from Glenn Beck's television show, within weeks of the Fox host calling Obama "a racist" and saying the president "has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."

Now, Farmers Insurance can be added to that list, a Farmers spokesperson confirms to POLITICO.

"We advertise on Fox News Channel which places our ads in the Network programming, and we ceased placing on Glenn Beck a week ago," said the spokesperson.

Glenn Beck's Ratings Up Amid Obama 'Racist' Controversy

    Aug 19 2009
Glenn Beck may be the subject of an advertiser boycott, but as long as his ratings remain high, he's probably not going anywhere soon. As Mediabistro's TV Newser reported yesterday, Beck's 5 PM Fox News show had record high ratings last week with nearly 2.5 million total viewers tuning in to see his highly theatrical take on current events.

'Racist Obama' call turns off advertisers

    4:00AM Thursday Aug 20, 2009
    By David Usborne

NEW YORK - It may in the end have little impact on the bottom line of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, but a fast-gathering boycott by some of America's best-known conglomerates of Glenn Beck, a conservative commentator on his Fox News channel in the United States, is beginning to take on embarrassing proportions.

The baby-faced Beck joined Fox News in January and has quickly established himself as one of the network's stars by feeding the political prejudices of its mostly conservative audience.

Indeed, his daily assaults against President Barack Obama and, in recent weeks his healthcare plans, have helped Fox achieve record ratings.

But Beck, who moonlights on the comedy circuit, stepped on too many sensibilities a few weeks ago, however, when he suggested that Obama has a "deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture".

He went on: "I'm not saying that he doesn't like white people. I'm saying that he has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist."

Spearheading the advertisers' boycott of his daily programme is an African-American online political group called Colour of Change.

Some 145,000 of its members signed a petition asking Beck's advertisers to stop supporting him and the response has been impressive.

On Tuesday alone, eight new top-brand companies said they were joining the already long roster of firms no longer willing to have their spots aired during Beck's show.

They included Wal-Mart, the discount retailing chain, as well as two other big national retail giants, CVS and Best Buy.

"We have instructed our advertising agency to inform Fox to ensure Glenn Beck's programme is not part of our advertising plan," a spokesman for the chemist CVS confirmed to the Huffington Post website.

Other companies that had already agreed to spurn the show included Procter & Gamble, Radio Shack and Geico.

None of these advertisers have said they will boycott the Fox channel entirely and thus are likely simply to shift their dollars to other programmes on the network's schedule.

But their actions are beginning to resonate on the national stage, if only because it is proving to be remarkably successful.

"It's rare for a campaign directed at a TV show's advertisers to be this successful," said Colour of Change founder James Rucker.
"But we won't stop here. We're going to continue reaching out to Beck's remaining advertisers."

Fans of Beck - and they are legion - are fighting back.

They offer solace to their brethren and the broadcaster himself with a newly minted website.

Called DefendGlenn.com, it boasts a "Turncoat List" of boycotting companies and urges visitors to contact them.

"Tell them how big your family is and what you buy, and how much you used to spend on their products each month ... and how you bought their competitor's product today," it advises.

Fox News itself has had little to say of the boycott. It did however issue a statement soon after Beck made the allegations of racism, not on his regular show but on a morning programme called Fox and Friends, saying Beck had "expressed a personal opinion, which represented his own views, not those of the Fox News Channel".

Beck made the remarks after the President suggested that a white policeman who had arrested the black Harvard law professor Henry Louis Gates had acted "stupidly".

    - INDEPENDENT
'Racist Obama' call turns off advertisers - World - NZ Herald News

Between this and the YouTube montage video of Jon Stewart highlighting just what a raging hypocrite Beck is I don't know how anyone can really take him seriously. The man seemingly has no real principles and is simply a ratings whore.

That people do take his twaddle seriously really isn't much of a commentry on the general levels of critical thinking of his audience. Further evidence that people like nothing better than to have their innate fears, predjudices and bigotry 'validated' too.
