actually there shite guard dogs in general, most would make friends with the local burglar if he offered a pat. they just look the part and have an extremely high prey drive. meaning they love to fight and hunt.
and that has nothing to do with human aggression.
it's like taking a baby at birth from an aristocratic family and letting the local crips gang raise him. there will be blood!
there are not too many better companion dogs than a well bred top bloodline apbt.
    i prefer staffordshires myself.

Pit bulls are great dogs for CERTAIN people in proper circumstances.. A pit bull is not a dog to have around your family. The sweetest pits alive can one day have a mental imbalance and snap, just like any other dog, only more frequently and with much larger consequences.

People just need to realize they're for protecting and not loving up to family. I think pit's should be regulated heavily, and owners must be aware if not certified to own one. However I don't believe they should be banned from society. They are legal in the US almost everywhere. As far as I know only Cleveland Ohio and Miami Florida do not allow the breed. Rest in piece mother and unborn baby.

I have owned a pitbull here, and in the UK before the ban.

My dog is a terrible guard dog, he wags his tail at anyone that comes near the house and believes all my visitors come to see him not me. He is so over friendly with people its annoying. He would give Somchai a hand with the tv on the way out, its that bad.

He is however extremely aggressive towards other dogs at times. He requires a lot of exercise and I try to take him walking/swimming for at least an hour a day. I'm lucky to have a very quiet strip of beach near me where we can do that.

If I miss his exercise for a day or two I really notice a difference in him, he seems to always be on the look out for other dogs and the dog aggression multiplies.

With the right training and exercise they can make great pets in my opinion.

I wonder how many dogs here get any of the exercise they need due to the restrictions on where you can walk due to soi dogs. Or how many get even basic obedience training.

Also of the dogs we read about in the news how many are just tied up or caged all day long with nothing other to do than go crazy.

I don't dispute they are a very powerful breed, and can be used as a weapon but I believe the problem starts with the owners. If they don't learn how to socialise and the basic training that every dog should learn at an earlier age then its very hard to break the bad habits and unwanted behaviours later on when they get big and powerful.

Would I leave him alone with children?

We'll no, but I wouldn't leave any breed of dog alone with children.
Even if not through aggression a friendly 35+kg dog can do some serious damage just playing.

what are you talking about? your losing me. "they're for protecting" protecting what?
an american pit bull terrier would not make a top 10 guard dog list in our life time.
"chemical imbalance" is that a known trait to apbt's? your talking garbage.

Nice entertaining dogs if you have a shit load of land and no children..otherwise go to the temple, get a soi dog fixed up and watch it become the most loyal companion you could imagine.

Pitbulls are dogs for the wanna be tough brigade, they should be regarded as an offensive weapon and the owners should need a license to keep them. I'd happily destroy the lot of them.

All dogs can bite, but when these kind of dogs bite it's serious.
There are bulls and mastiffs that come to the local park, but other dog owners don't want to mix with them no matter how much the owners claim that their dog is different, it's just not worth the risk. They can cause serious damage.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

The stats on pitbull terriers are the highest of all breeds:
    Pit bull terrier 1110 495 397 104 608 #
Not saying Pitbull terriers are inherently bad, but there IS a high (the highest) stats of attacks on children, adults, killing, and maiming.

I assume that an owner/master has to do a very thorough job of training the PB Terrier.

I've had animal lover friends with these dogs, but I'd never want one, nor want to live near one.

Yes, it's the lack of trust. Possible snap. Around family, kids, elderly - anybody.

I've had Gold Retrievers, Britanny Spaniels, as pets in my family, and have been around many breed of dogs (as I like dogs), but I'll never trust a PB Terrier.

When did the UK ban Pit Bull Terriers?

Now your going to try and convince us you would walk straight onto a property that has a pitbull sitting by the front door grinning at you?

One dog I would cross the street rather then walk directly past it.

Strikes terror into most people just based upon it's reputation.

Herer are some posts by some PB Terrier owners/former owners on an American forum. If ya don't mind, I'll post some brief snippets below. Do you folks agree with this? Also, this couple raised the Pitbull since it was a puppy. And obviously, it killed one of its owners. But what about the "master" or pecking order? True?
I grew up with pit bulls and a very broad range of different breeds of dogs over the years. That's true, you have to assert that you are the "pack leader" and are the master. Like any other dog, the pit bull would of showed signs of disapproval of the pecking order with the woman long before this happened. This woman's death is the result of the "pack leader" not recognizing the signs and addressing them accordingly.

So it's the owner's (pack leader) fault... For buying them in the first place perhaps.

My dog often tries to move up in the pecking order, but he's not likely to kill you over it.

A high number for sure. But I am very doubtful that these figures are correct and all are APBTs. A lot of different breeds that look similar are just labeled as APBT when they attack.

They're are dangerous because of their biting pressure..but relatively tame compared to hyenas and erm, turtles..

National Geographic’s Dr. Brady Barr’s Bite Pressure Tests

Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic (Dangerous Encounters: Bite Force, 8pm est 8/18/2005) – Dr. Barr measured bite forces of many different creatures. Domestic dogs were included in the test.
Here are the results of all of the animals tested:
Humans: 120 pounds of bite pressure
Domestic dogs: 320 LBS of pressure on avg. A German Shepherd Dog, American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), and Rottweiler were tested using a bite sleeve equipped with a specialized computer instrument. The APBT had the least amount of pressure of the 3 dogs tested.
    Wild dogs: 310 lbs
    Lions: 600 lbs
    White sharks: 600 lbs
    Hyenas: 1000 lbs
    Snapping turtles: 1000 lbs
    Crocodiles: 2500 lbs
Nat. Geo actually did a follow-up on this first special, “The Big Bite II-Dangerous Encounters”. Using the same techniques, Dr. Barr tested some other
animals, including a Hyacinth McCaw(parrot), a Tasmanian Devil, a Savanah monitor lizard, a Nurse shark and a large Alpha male wolf. The wolf’s bite
was a bit over 400 pounds p.s.i, making it the strongest biter of the canids, but the two-pound McCaw nearly equaled that 100+ pound wolf, with a bite force of 375 p.s.i, and it did not appear to be doing anything more than just playing around with the bite meter instrument, as it was a tame bird! In the first bite-force special, the APBT (which DID appear to be biting that sleeve for all it was worth, a good “full-mouth” bite)managed only 127 p.s.i, just seven pounds more than the HUMAN tested! In the second special, Dr. Barr was convinced that the young crocodile he’d tested was not performing up to snuff in its bite, since all the crocodilians he’d tested had all been freshly-caught specimens, which were exhausted after a struggle. He tested the device again on a 18-foot wild male Nile croc, in the wild, unrestrained, that was brumating in a den on an African river bank to escape the daytime heat, by actually crawling down the burrow himself! That animal managed, with a single bite, to exert a pressure of over SIX THOUSAND pounds per square inch, making it the most powerful bite of any animal, ever recorded.
Nat. Geo channel does state that a DVD or CD-ROM of the programming is available upon request. The names of these two documentaries are “Dangerous Encounters: Bite Force” and “Dangerous Encounters: Bite Force 2″, both with Dr. Brady Barr. Here’s a link to Nat. Geo’s customer
service, and they might be able to help; maybe at least transcrips will be available.

RE pitbull mauls pregnant woman REAL STORY

According to residents of the neighborhood, the dog did NOT maul Darla Napora, “just found out that the woman fell off a ladder and hit her head...husband came home found the dog standing over her...he put the dog out side....it got loose and cops shot the dog...thinking that it had mauled the lady. The dog had blood on it's body because he was trying to nudge her to make her move....”

Now that the media has stirred up world wide hatred of pitbulls, causing untold suffering for these dogs, think they will CORRECT the story?? NOT

    Pacifica dog mauling…what really happened?

According to residents of the Napora neighborhood, the dog did not maul Darla Napora, “just found out that the woman fell off a ladder and hit her head...husband came home found the dog standing over her...he put the dog out side....it got loose and cops shot the dog...thinking that it had mauled the lady. The dog had blood on it's body because he was trying to nudge her to make her move....”

Darla’s father, Doug Robinson was quoted as saying, “Lets wait for the autopsy I talked to the police and will wait for the professionals to make a decision I have been a police officer and a detective for several years. This is my daughter and I will wait for the evidence.”

    Pacifica dog mauling

Wait and see. It's certainly a bit strange for the dog to have killed it's owner.

^^ This will not change the minds of the people who hate the breed based on little more than what they see in the media..... Sad, And if the poor lady did fall from a latter and die, While her pit bull tried to nudge her so she would wake up....That's just a tragedy, Now this man is without wife, child and possibly a best friend who did what it could while master was off at work.
