perhaps you'd like to provide some evidence for how these people actually vote.

As I assume you know, Orthodox Jews are among the very poorest people in New York City, and frankly I'd be surprised if they voted Republican overwhelmingly, in the same way American Jews vote overwhelmingly, and consistently, for Democratic Presidential candidates. The only Republican Presidential candidate in living menory that has ever drawn any significant number of Jewish American votes was Reagan, and even then 60%+ still voted for Carter and Mondale.

also quite funny you're quoting a poll that says '48% of Jews surveyed said they would consider voting for Bush in 2004', but when it came to the election itself, 78% of them rejected Bush and voted for Kerry.

I''ve noticed this on online forums before. People that have an anti-Israel agenda like to think that they themselves are in some way 'progressive'. This means they would like to believe that Jewish people, especially American Jewish people, are right of center in their politics, despite the overwhelming body of evidence that suggests otherwise.

what must make anti-Israel liberals cringe is the knowledge that had Florida's 250,000 Arab-Americans voted the same way Florida Jewish-Americans did - overwhelmingly for Gore - then Gore would have taken the state and the election. Almost 50% of Arab-Americans voted for Bush in 2000 - and that's when there was an Arab-American, Nader, on the ticket.

I knew it anyway, but to check anybody can just google 'Arab American vote 2000'. One of the first hits is an Arab American website that gives the results and also an analysis.

Gore got 38, Bush 46 and Nader 14 of Arab American votes in 2000. Had Florida's 200,000 Arab American voters, on their turnout of 85%, voted 75% for Gore like Jewish Americans did, then Gore would have carried the state by over 10,000 votes.

I'll borrow a term from Gridiron, 'Running Interference'.

Israel has been prominent in the news recently, for all the wrong reasons. Of course the story of the moment is the deaths on the Mavi Marmara. Or was.

Am I the only person that sees this inordinate amount of Press attention to the ill considered (and Wrong) comment of a distinctly past it nonagenarian Hack as a fairly blatant form of 'running interference'- designed to deflect the current media spotlight from Israel, it's government and it's misdeeds?

You can fool some of the people some of the time....

As for Helen, here is my epitaph for you Dahlin' (thanks Neil Young)- "it's better to burn out, than to fade away".

As for the White House Press corps, I'm sure they will be quite happy for the best seat in the gallery to no longer belong to an obscure wrinkly.

Just as stupid as the knee jerk reaction to the ship boarding,

The media tirade against Helen Thomas is as illogical as it is hysterical. The few sentences uttered by her were, as she quickly acknowledged, wrong—deeply so, I would add. But they cannot justify the road-rage destruction of the dean of the Washington press corps.

Or maybe she was a blemish on the youthful healthy skin of the press corps.

Who says they're "legal" - You?

Why is France - a nation conquered in battle - a member of the Security Council - and why is french an equally official working language of the UN?

There are plenty of reasons to question the bullshit in our present day world. Israel is one of them.

My personal view is that the Jews are there, the state of Israel has been created, and there's no turning the clock back. But with a real "UN" the world community could have its majority say - the US of course would never allow a real world democratic vote at the UN - so it ain't gonna happen.

Just don't lay the "legal" bullshit on us okay, Boonmee? It's bullshit and it's boring. Anyone can see that.

Seems odd to be reading someone trying to be eloquent and see a school-boy error like this. That is for things. Who is for people .. the only person who .. Canadians do that a lot. Are you Canadian?

For a real UN, the member nations would have to contribute. How come oil rich nations from the Middle East and Russia pay next to nothing? How come China pays less than Canada? China can spend billions on building an expansionist military, but can't contribute to the UN and it gets a veto? Hello? What's up with that? How does oil rich Nigeria get away with paying next to nothing? Why does Israel pay more in dues than its oil rich neighbors?

Maybe Helen should have held off unto she read yesterdays BBC report on the genetic studies that show that those silly jews do have their origins in the "Levant" or Judea & Sumaria as they called it, or as it is called Israel today.

And studies have shown, that caucasians originates from Africa.

On a serious note: Where I come from, we have a lot of Palestinien refugees.
Any suggestions, where they should go, if not to Palestine ?

Some even have landdeeds and birthcertificates that shows their origin.

The Jews and Palestinians both come from that area. Right now the Jews are showing the most aggression most of the time and they are occupying the lands of others. They aren't out to make friends and end the 'war' so the war goes on.

total garbage. At 73.42 years, ife expectancy is higher in Gaza than it is in Egypt, Turkey, and Iran (or Thailand, for that matter), and the people aren't under Israeli 'rule'. They're governed by Hamas, who took power in a violent coup in summer of 2007.

Israeli rule was so bad in Sinai, even when they were governing it under marshal law, that the Bedouin there preferred it to the alternative when it got passed back to Egypt in 1982. Had anyone polled them, they would have opted to remain the way the were. Having seen what the Israelis were like during 15 years of marshal law, and remembering all too well what the Cairene Egyptians were like, they would have preferred to take the chances with the Israelis.

Israeli 'rule' is so bad that Darfur refugees, Bedouin in Sinai and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, try to sneak into Israel all the time.

the point is it's better than being in any of the other Arab or North African countries, including the rich ones like UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, etc where GDP per capita is much higher than it is in Israel - and the Darfur refugees know this. That's why they make a beeline for Israel.

In Israel, Darfur refugees, when they are caught trying to sneak into Israel or caught within Israel itself, are treated humanely, fed and housed properly like refugees usually are in most of the other liberal democracies in this world, are generally well looked after. In Egypt and the rest of the Arab countries, they're treated like animals.

    Helen Thomas and Rod Blagojevich
What do they have in common?

Their colleagues publicly treated both of them as members in good standing of their respective professional communities, until they did things that embarrassed those communities. In each case it was the embarrassment, not the bad behavior, that was the problem
