Disabled Derby mother fears deportation to Cambodia

A DISABLED Derby mother-of- two has been told she faces being kicked out of the country – because she cannot study for a citizenship test.

Sokkha Cooper, from Cambodia, lost her right arm in a train accident as a child and suffered from polio while growing up, leaving her virtually unable to walk.

She has lived with her husband, Paul, in the UK for more than two years. The couple have two children and, three months ago, Sokkha applied for a visa to allow her to permanently settle.

However, the Home Office said she would be refused permission to stay in the UK because she has not taken the Life in the UK test.

The Sinfin couple thought Sokkha, 23, would be exempt because of her disabilities.

She can walk only about 20 metres at a time and Paul cannot take time off work to take her to classes to help her pass the test.

The couple sent statements from both her GP and the Department of Work and Pensions as evidence she should be excused from the test. But they were told that the Home Office was not satisfied and that she had to leave the country "as soon as possible".

Last night, after the Derby Telegraph took up her case, the Home Office appeared to soften its position and suggested that Sokkha might be able to appeal.

Sokkha said she was devastated by the thought of being separated from her children, Angel, three, and Dylan, one. She said: "I know I'm not from England but I feel it is my home. I don't want to leave it."

why can she not buy the book online and study at home? I am sure her husband can spare an hour to take her to the test once she has studied. You don't need to go to classes...........

Yea, let them kick her out. Solve all Englands immigration problems at a stroke. Everything was roses until she arrived but she was the straw that broke the camels back. Let the other economics migrants and suicide bombers stay, they at least provide us with something to complain about whereas she just stays at home minding her own business ....... hopeless.

What a strange thing to think, next we would have all the 3rd worlds crippled catching flights to the UK.

Anyway whats wrong with her getting a wheel chair and catching the bus?

No wonder she doesn't want to go back to Cambodia.....Not much life there for a cripple....

If she hasn't enough resolve to sit and pass the citizenship test, too fvckng bad. She has disabilities but easy enough to overcome, I can't believe her old man can't get a bit of time off work to provide her with transport.

while I have some sympathy for the disabled I did two legs of the whitbread round the world, with the crew including a victim of Polio, he performed nearly as well as the rest of the crew.

The girl has struck the jack pot, (imagine how a one armed disabled girls life would be in cambo) you would think that she would move heaven and earth to comply with the rules.

Basically she is probably just a thick cambo chick and they are trying to get out of doing the test (sorry to state the obvious) which she is probably to thick to pass, so the Home Office are right to refuse her Indefinate Leave to Remain, so basically she has applied for the wrong visa, if she applies for Further Leave to Remain as opposed to Indefinate it would have been granted.

As others have said you don't need to go to college, although thick fokers who can't read and write English who wish to stay in the UK should as obviously they won't pass the test otherwise, for other people just buy the books off the internet, which have all the questions and answers in, then go and sit the test which consists of 24 multiple choice questions, with a pass mark of 18 when you are ready.

Hi, Paul here. Sokkha's husband.

To be honest, i was shocked to hear that she was able to claim for disability allowance on a spouse visa, but the way i look at it is that is the government's problem and not ours if they want to allow people on temporary visas to claim benefits. I assure you I have paid much more in taxes than my wife receives in benefit and this is the only benefit she claims. No, you cannot get the 'dole' until you reside here permanently just for your information. Not that she would be able to claim it anyway as i work full time and earn above the threshold.

Not much life in cambodia for a cripple you say...now maybe there are not any financial benefits but at least you don't get racist biggots like yourself making offensive comments.

As for my mates, not one of them has ever given me flack of any sort, probably because if they were that kind of a person i would never have been friends with them in the first place and because they can see beyond sokkha's disabilities i.e. her qualities as a person and the fact she is a beautiful woman. Unlike prats like yourself who just wouldn't get it if you lived to be 1000. If you live in a world where your mates would abuse you for having a disabled wife, you have my deepest sympathy.
