Alabama murderer becomes first inmate in the world executed with 'painless' nitrogen

A prisoner in Alabama has become the first inmate in the world to be executed with nitrogen gas.

Convicted murderer Kenneth Smith was put to death on Thursday after the US Supreme Court declined his legal bid to halt his execution.

The use of nitrogen gas as a method of execution is highly controversial and had never been used before in the US.

It involves clamping a mask tightly to the face, covering the mouth and nose. The mask is then fed with nitrogen gas. The person continues to breathe normally, but with no oxygen present the body gradually shuts down until death occurs - effectively they are suffocated.

Smith's execution comes after he survived a botched lethal injection in 2022 which helped prompt a review of the state's death penalty procedures.

The Supreme Court justices declined to uphold Smith's legal challenge that claimed a second execution attempt by Alabama - after the first failure caused him severe trauma - would violate the US Constitution's 8th Amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishment.

However the decision was not unanimous, with three justices voting to halt the execution.

"Having failed to kill Smith on its first attempt, Alabama has selected him as its 'guinea pig' to test a method of
execution never attempted before," Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote, saying she would have granted the injunction.

    "The world is watching."

Just minutes before the execution was carried out, the Supreme Court refused for a second time to intervene to stop it going ahead.

Smith was also separately contesting the legality of Alabama's nitrogen gas protocol, which his lawyers previously called "a novel method of execution that has never been attempted by any state or the federal government".

What's wrong about leading them into a room and then simply shooting them behind the ear at point blank range. No big song and dance about it.

Or kneeling them down and twacking a big ol' spike through their forehead.

    The world's gone mad.

Didn't you post almost exactly the same thing last week?

    Seems odd.

Imprisoned for 38 years and then suffered a botched execution attempt followed by a second attempt culminating in a prolonged bout of suffocation ending in a series of terminal seizures, a process lasting a gruelling ten minutes in which the victim’s body writhed and arched in violent spasms.

Americans are fucking savages, a crippled society still emerging from its violent birth.

Fuck ‘em. They’re no different from commie Chinks, lumpen Russian scum, nig nogs, wogs and assorted dago filth.

    Wrong.

He lost a final appeal in the Supreme Court against the execution decision, on the grounds of the method of punishment being 'cruel and unusual', fluke.

A journalist who witnessed the execution said he 'thrashed violently on the gurney for 25 minutes'.

In which she clearly states that the deceased (Mr Smith) previously requested that method.

Lawyers for the state had argued that such a death was painless and quick. They also noted that Mr. Smith and his lawyers had themselves identified the method as preferable to the troubled practice of lethal injection in the state.

But in their last-ditch petition to the Supreme Court, Mr. Smith’s lawyers argued that Alabama’s protocol would create a substantial risk for suffering.

Neither was "Listening to Edmond's attempts at humour" which would surely have been more painful than the crime for which he was put to death.

This man stabbed his victim, a woman he was hired to kill, 8 times in the chest and then twice in the neck, and so I find it very pleasing when I read that he writhed and struggled for 25 minutes as he slowly asphyxiated. 50 minutes would have been better, and 150 better still. Those convicted of crimes of violence should be punished by having to suffer an amount of pain, violence and terror equivalent to that which they inflicted on their victim.

This piece of shit did in fact request this method of execution, hoping he would be reprieved at the last minute by judges who considered the method too unusual.

He was hired to do it, too.

So - could well not have been his first job.

Nobody ruminating on the appropriacy of capital punishment, and in particular this method of capital punishment, is doing so because they think this guy was not a pos.

    Is that true?
The trial record records that although both were hired to kill Elizabeth Sennet, John Parker carried out the killing whilst Kenneth Smith looked on. At the trial the Jury determined that Smith should be spared but this was overruled by the judge. This overruling has since been banned and deemed unconstitutional in the US.

So I think your comments are, at best, highly controversial and more likely made out of complete ignorance of the case.

As for the writhing on the gurney for 25 minutes, I think that is a little bit of an exaggeration, with the media reporting anything from 2 minutes to 25 minutes.

The state governor didn't even bother to attend and I imagine her statement was written with the same level of commitment.

Those are not mutually exclusive categories.

Yet Ed Case took it to be a report on facts.

He seems to exercise all the intellectual vigour of a telly tubby these days.

The fact that he had alreadyserved 38 years imprisonment under the threat of execution which was then carried out twice culminating in his violent, prolonged death is not a cruel and unusual punishment?

Americans are fucking savages, plain and simple.

A man is many people in his lifetime and the fellow who was executed in such a hideous manner by his barbarian captors was not necessarily the chap involved in the crime.

Under a more civilised canon a sentence has three elements; deterrence, punishment and rehabilitation. You can’t be rehabilitated if you’re fucking dead. Also, these fucking septic savages all claim to be Christians so killing a man judicially is not necessarily in the catechism although these stupid seppos probably argue they’re doing the Lord’s work.

The thing is, in states where there is a death penalty the incidence of murder is higher than in those states which do not have it.

It is not a deterrence but the stupid cannot grasp this.

Tax is a dentist and therefore unbalanced and psychopathic by his very nature.
