Well, considering they failed to kill him with a lethal injection, it's hardly surprising he decided to go with nitrogen. Hobson's choice really.

The problem is the jurisdiction in which he was prosecuted is third world. In a civilised country he would have been convicted and sentenced to a life term with a minimum of 30 years and would have been released by now albeit on a parole license until his natural death.

The US is very much an emerging country populated in the majority by stupid people.
