Crime vs. Punishment - Has Justice Been Served?

Well, to all, what d'ya think - does the punishment fit the crime?

In my opinion 'tis a bit excessive - perhaps a years worth of community service an animal shelter would suffice - perhaps at a "kill" shelter - watching puppies get slaughtered.

Coachella woman caught dumping puppies in a dumpster sentenced to one year in prison
    DILLON THOMPSON AOL.COM Aug 15th 2019 5:03PM

The California woman who was caught on camera dumping a bag of live puppies into a dumpster has been sentenced to one year in prison, according to BuzzFeed News.

    Deborah Sue Culwell, 54,
has pled guilty to all 14 charges stemming from the incident, in which she tossed seven newborn dogs into a large trash can in Coachella, Calif.

    Culwell
was arrested in April after police identified her as the woman shown in the surveillance footage. At the time of her arrest, authorities found 38 dogs — which were "not in good condition" — living in her home, according to CNN.

The judge sentenced Culwell to 365 days in jail on Wednesday, 90 of which will be served under a work release. She will also serve seven years probation after her release, during which time she will not be allowed to own any animals.

Culwell's story gained national attention earlier this year after the video of her dumping the animals went viral on the Internet. The footage shows Culwell drive her white Jeep to the trash can behind an auto parts store before throwing the bag of puppies inside.

    Temperatures
were in the mid-90s that day, and the puppies were stuck inside the dumpster for around an hour. One of the animals died a few weeks later, but the other six survived.

Riverside County animal services commander Chris Mayer said at the time that a "good samaritan" led to the dogs's rescue.

"The Good Samaritan played a major role in saving [the] puppies’ lives,"
Mayer said in a Facebook post. "His actions were humane and heroic."

Mayer called Culwell's actions "despicable" and said there was "no excuse" for her behavior.

"Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners," Mayer said. "This was a shameful act."

Only thing I argue with is labeling the "good samaritans" actions as heroic - humane and admirable, yes, heroic, well, kinda stretches it.

Sends a message I suppose to other people who 'hoard' large numbers of dogs and cats, making a shithole of their own environment and hell for their neighbours. I would also stipulate that she never be allowed to own any more animals for life.

She deserves serious punishment and perhaps some mental analysis/support.

People who treat animals that way are more likely (sweeping statement coming here... ) to treat other people/children. She should be neutered for starters...

Yup, hoarding animals - then throwing puppies away - definitely something wrong from the neck up. But, does being well, "crazy", exonerate her of the crime? Unfortunately in the US our judicial system seems all to accepting of playing the blame game and "forgiving" a transgressor provided we can find something to "blame" the transgression on, such as "mental unbalance" or perhaps a "troubled childhood", etc.

Nah, no scarlet letter, although a few courses of aversion therapy shock treatments may be in order.

Pretty sure a "licence" from a government agency is required

The US has the highest incarceration rate per 100,000 population in the world.

As to the given case it's probably a good thing and hopefully sends a deterrent message (although I doubt it).

Rubbish. And imo the punishment was too harsh, they are dogs not kids which some childless people with shitzu fannylicking lapdogs and various other animal loving bestialitists including the judge can't seem to see a difference between.

Although she'd have got a lot longer I'd hope if it was a kid

Speaking for myself, I can tell you if your shitzu kept shitting on my garden, I would think about poisoning it, no I wouldn't actually, I couldn't do that... but I would have thoughts of it being kidnapped, taking that stupid bow off its head and selling it to a proper Korean family

If it was kids I'd just call Childline

If you even think of treating ChokDee that way, Dilly...

No names, but I've met a person or two who as kids liked to hurt animals - they turned into sociopathic and violent adults. There is a direct link between one's ability to empathize with other sentient creatures (such as the wife, the dog, etc) and one's treatment of those creatures; it's one of the elements that sets psychopaths and sociopaths apart from loving, caring, well-adjusted adults such as meself...

    Cycling should be banned!!!

Scottish hares only, the heather is not good for them

The English ones are too fast and turn too sharply in the eastern stubble fields for the deerhound

She doesn't need punishing, she needs care and attention. Unfortunately, I doubt she'll get that on prison.

Sounds like she does have a few mental issues. Sadly in many countries, the level of help or care for these people is abysmal.

Yet, we still insist on slowly exterminating own kind and earthly environment.

Any picture is missed as is reflective debate on trivialities as a nutter that hoards and mistreats canines.

    Blind to the real crimes.

as this is nothing to do with this story,
has justice been served? ask the family of the old couple murdered for money by a PRICK who was let out of jail after serving just 3YRS.AND 7MONTHS for a previous murder.
maybe if they gave out punishment as of above then MAYBE JUST MAYBE this country wouldnt be out of control.

Ah, yes . . . 'libtard' land . . . where cause takes precedence over symptom. Awful, how dare those 'libtards'
