The American media seems to be psychologically preparing the US public for a conflict with NK.

It's the usual process in previous conflicts, such as Gulf War I and II.

China is also unhappy about the deployment of THAAD as it's range encroaches Chinese airspace.

Yeah, the Chinese are not too happy about reunification and US troops on their border.

IMHO time to pull US troops from SK. Pretty obvious when the locals are protesting against us. Do a deal with China: "You don't want US troops on your border and we are tired of this BS too. Tighten the screws on Fat Boy, drop free cell phones, newspapers and other information to the North Korean people.

US troops pull out, Fat Boy can bad mouth China, regime change eventually and China gets a dynamic trading partner.

    The Korean Missile Crisis Thread

Namesake only ... in honour of those pesky Ruskies and Cubans.

    Why?

Because the ones from North Korea are more effective then the Suicide Bombers in blowing themselves up!

North Korea test-fires ballistic missile, appears to have failed: South Korean military

North Korea has test-fired a ballistic missile from a region north of its capital, but it appears to have failed, South Korea's military says,
defying intense pressure from the United States and the reclusive state's main ally, China.

An official at South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launch but did not immediately have any further information.
South Korean news agency Yonhap said the missile appeared to have blown up a few seconds into its flight.

The US military said it tracked the missile launch, but it did not leave North Korean territory and did not pose a threat to North America.

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the missile was probably a medium-range missile known as a KN-17 and appeared to have broken up within minutes of taking off.

The US is looking for an excuse. Trump wants to play with his new big boy toys.
Nork has never threatened anyone except in retaliation. Nork has a right to defend itself, just as Israel has.
When Israel is pressured as much as Nork to comply with nuclear treaties, I'll consider changing my view as appropriate.

Israel and Nork are apples and oranges, IMO.

How so? Both are rogue nations with uninspected nuclear capabilities.
One difference is that Israel HAS threatened to fire upon another nation pre-preemptively, and thus should be the first one to be forced to comply with international standards.
Another difference is Israel continues to flout international law and is constantly expanding into territory not it's own....if it needs to be defensive, it's because it is itself aggressive.
And then when you consider what the US did to NK only 60 odd years ago (more bombs dropped in NK than were dropped in the entire Pacific Theatre), and you can't really blame them for being defensive.

Yes, but Israel is our rogue nation!

    Just kidding.

Yes Israel's nukes probably need to go too (then India and Pakistan) but you can only do one thing at a time and NK is probably the most dangerous, and deservedly at the front of the queue.

The strategic effort from the superpowers has to be ultimate denuclearisation since nuclear weapons are worthless to G20 nations who could never use them in any realistic combat scenario.

They are only a credible threat from a country that tries to project an image of unhinged lunacy like NK. So, unfortunately for fat-boy, time's up.

The first 5 min. are quite interesting of this rare video of North Korea. A lot of U.S. or western cities can not compete with this infrastructure. Would be a shame to nuke it.

Thaad is there and is "operational" if needed. And T says he'd meet with KJU. I don't see that happening.

The Thaad system only has "initial intercept capability"
    at present
The US military says its controversial Thaad missile defence system is now operational in South Korea.

The system can intercept North Korean missiles although full operational capability is still some months away.

Tensions have been rising around the Korean peninsula, with repeated threats from North Korea and the presence of a group of US warships and a submarine.
North Korea reacted angrily to the latest military exercise, accusing the US of risking a nuclear war.

The rise in tension comes only a day after US President Donald Trump said he would be "honoured" to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, in the right circumstances.

The US announced last week it would activate Thaad, which was not expected to be in use until late 2017, within days.

According to JJ Suh, professor of Politics and International Affairs at International Christian University in Japan, the aim of the THAAD deployment in Seongju is not to protect South Korean citizens at all: “This system is designed to work at higher altitudes, higher than 45 kilometers. But most North Korean missiles [that would be used against South Korea] are short-range missiles that would fly below 45 kilometers.”

The THAAD system, Suh said, serves U.S. strategic interests in the region:
Postol also notes the THAAD system has not been proven to work. “The infrared seeker on THAAD interceptors is easily fooled by decoys,” he said. An enemy can launch several fake missiles along with the real one; they would shoot out in different directions to confuse the THAAD system, which would then have a hard time discerning and honing in on the real missile.
Yet U.S. and South Korean taxpayers will end up paying for this system. One THAAD unit costs 1.3 billion U.S. dollars to produce. Then there is also the annual operation cost, which amounts to 22 million U.S. dollars. Neither the South Korean nor the U.S. government has said who will foot that bill, and the South’s Ministry of National Defense declined to tell Korea Exposé the total cost of THAAD deployment in Seongju, saying, “The numbers aren’t public.”

Considering most of the damage to Seoul would be from massive amounts of artillery fire, that statement would be correct. But I'm sure somebody made a lot of money from it, so it's all going according to plan.

^Seoul is about 50km from the DMZ. Just beyond the range of almost all conventional artillery.

Any pre-emptive US strike would focus heavily on neutralising artillery at the DMZ closest to Seoul before bunker busting the suspected nuclear development sites.

Unlikely at the end of that day that conventional NK artillery would do anything more than cosmetic damage before it was taken out, if it could even reach the city centre at all.

Some research claims that overall damage and casualties in Seoul would be minimal, but those studies have relied on very conservative data, especially regarding the effective range of North Korean artillery systems. Many findings do not take into account newly deployed, modernized 122-mm multiple launch rocket systems with extended range, or the much more capable 300-mm multiple rocket launchers. If projectile flight distances reach proven ranges (or commonly accepted ones) and involve these new systems, then the northern portion of Seoul could be saturated with fire. Even areas south of the Han River could be within range of 170-mm self-propelled guns, 240-mm multiple rocket launchers or 300-mm multiple rocket launchers, depending on their position on the North Korean side of the DMZ. If every one of Pyongyang's 300-mm multiple rocket launcher systems were directed against Seoul, their range would be sufficient to rain fire across the city and beyond. A single volley could deliver more than 350 metric tons of explosives across the South Korean capital, roughly the same amount of ordnance dropped by 11 B-52 bombers.

For every scaremongering article claiming Dante's Inferno there another one explaining why Seoul is out of range to 99% of NK's artillery.

Seoul and the US have been gathering data, researching and planning tactics for years about neutralising NK's mostly outdated artillery near the DMZ in the event of a conflagration. If the US gets the first strike they will most likely take out the most dangerous stuff very quickly.

Very unlikely that NK can realistically inflict any serious damage.

My link was from Stratfor, one of the most reliable sources on the subject.

If the US strikes first they will be cunts for doing so. NK is contained and regardless of what the fearmongers think, won't risk a preemptive strike which would guarantee the regimes annihilation.

I am sure your googling efforts have also revealed a few articles outlining how unlikely the destruction of Seoul by NK artillery is but I will pass on getting into a cut and paste war.

Cunts or not it would be satisfying to give fatboy a hard slap just for his repeated casual threat to use nuclear weapons in the 21st century. KJU needs a spank and early bed.

Yes, a slap by a country who actually used them in the 20th century. No hypocrisy there. And there have been casual threats by the US to use them in the 21st century as well, as an offensive weapon, unlike NK's use as a defensive one.

    [Editorial]

On Apr. 27, US President Donald Trump asked South Korea to pay one billion dollars as the cost of deploying the THAAD missile defense system. The demand is absurd. It doesn’t make sense to ask South Koreans to pay for THAAD when the people don’t even want the system, and when that system is being deployed in Seongju County, North Gyeongsang Province – far from the armistice line – in order to protect US military bases. While many had been concerned that a substantial part of the financial burden of THAAD would be shifted to South Korea once the system became fully operational, those concerns have become reality more quickly, and on a larger scale, than expected. The administrations of former president Park Geun-hye and acting president Hwang Kyo-ahn deceived the public with the claim that since THAAD is a US weapons system, South Korea would only have to provide the base and the basic infrastructure. What excuses are they going to make now?
