    Bernard Manning RIP

Blackgang's British cousin seems to have left us:

    Comedy star Bernard Manning dies

Manning was a singer and compere before entering comedy

    Manning obituary

Controversial comedian Bernard Manning has died aged 76 after being treated in hospital for a kidney condition.
He shot to fame in the 1970s on ITV programme The Comedians, having already developed a career in music as a vocalist and a compere.
His website branded him "one of the most outrageous and successful comedians of our time". Manchester-based Manning denied being racist, once remarking: "I tell jokes. You never take a joke seriously." However, in 2002, he was banned from performing in the Dorset seaside town of Weymouth, where councillors were worried that his act would breach laws on race.

I suppose it must be something in the water that makes people from Manchester so ugly.

Bernard Manning wasn't even very funny. The guy who really made it out of that show "The Comedians" was London boy Mike Reid. He's a pretty good actor now.

He did have some funny moments... On people of South Asian decent living in the UK. "they think they are English... They're not fucking English just cuz a dog is born in a stable it doesn't make it a horse"

    Deplorable yet humourous. IMHO.

Not my favourite comedian. But I remember an interview when he was a guest along with Esther Rantzen. ER was being particularly anal and superior, berating him for the coarseness of his gags. Manning was un-apologetic merely saying that the blue jokes were what people wanted and it was easier to get a laugh with them. This made la Rantzen very huffy indeed. Manning then told a mildy blue joke and Rantzen nearly crapped herself in an effort not to laugh.

There is another anecdote about him, the truth of which I am uncertain.

At the time of the Cleveland child abuse allegations, Manning gave a performance in Cleveland and started his routine with the gag 'Nice to see so many fathers here tonight. I thought you'd all be home abusing your kids.' It was said that a number of men rushed the stage and beat him up.

Even if untrue it sort of sums Manning up.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

I saw Bernard Manning live twice, 82 & 84 in Brum.
He was funny alright, but hell was his humour racist.
I reckon he would have had to tone it down to have kept performing in the 90's.

bit racist, but bloody funny man,
you must be able to laugh at yourself first before you can laugh at others and he could.

if you were born in england does that make you english,

if your'e a dog and born in a stable does that make you a horse

I prefer the Oxbridge, post-modern ironist variety of comic, such as Ben Elton, David Baddiel and Ken Dodd.

^ I thought he was very funny live.
His sort of humour was quick witted, interaction with the audience type stuff- much funnier when you saw him live than on TV. I would not have wanted to be sitting near the front in a Bernard Manning show.
    IMO.

DrAndy, If you are born in England, then you are " British"????
Try telling a Scotsman that he's not Scottish, but British.

And Bernard Manning was a great comedian, who said aloud , what other people think.

I worked for him as a teenager in his Embassy club.
He treated all his staff well and no other comedian in the clubs, apart maybe from Les Dawson, could work an audience like Manning.

Bernard, dead, is now a legend. I met him. Find him unfunny? Love to see you at one of his do's - you'd be the first target. We'd love it. We know who we are. How Rushdie gets a knighthood & this guy goes without a bang is a fucking disgrace.

yes geoffy, Scotsmen are British, just check their passports. I would not tell them they are not Scottish though.

It is possible to be both..work it out

Manning could be funny, but often at the expense of other people. His racism was nasty and cheap. It was a different time when he was popular though, so he got away with it
    I have reported your post

    DrAndy,
I don't understand. but I also think that you dont understand. You wouldn't call a Scotsman anything but Scottish, or even a Welshman, or an Irishman, so what about an Englishman?? Of course our passports say Btitish, but I am, always have been, and always will be, an Englishman. And very proud of it.
What all this has got to do with Bernard Manning, I ,have forgotten, but i still think he was a great comedian. If people don't like him, and this applies to all other variety acts, then they don't have to watch.
I don't understand anyone who sits through a whole show, and then starts to criticise after it's all finished. On most TV sets there is an on/off switch, and/or a channel changer.
He was Jewish himself, but he ribbed the jews, and as you say , he had a go at every other race, religion, colour and the like, just like we do on TD.
Nobody, or almost nobody gets offended. Laughter is the best medicine.
Inter racial joking, or whatever you want to call it does not, or should not offend anyone.
The pictures in todays English newspapers, are what I call offensive. These foreigners, protesting in London , re the Knighting of Salman Rushdie (read their placards) Now , they are racists and offensive. What do you think????????

What do I think? about which bit?

Salman Rushdie..well, I can't understand giving him a knighthood as I don't like his books. They seem like they were written on a word processor and jumbled spontaneously (except for his first novel, which was OK). So, if his books are not much good, then he must have been given a knighthood for offending Muslims. In which case, the protestors have a point. They may be offensive, I am not sure they are racist (I have not read all their posters, mind you).

As for Scots and Brits, if you know someone is Scottish, then you would call him a Scot. If you were not sure, and he was holding his passport, then you would know he was a Brit.

so, all those Indian and African ethnic groups etc that were born in the UK (even England) are British, but not English. That is the point I was making.
