I have a apartment on the Gold Coast broad water, rented out, and have spent
Some time there, true it is beautiful however it is also expensive when compared to Thailand, but the Gold Coast is a good value holiday by Aussie standards.
If you want to try expensive try Perth or some trendy holiday spot like broome, not saying broome is not nice but it is expensive, and compare the dollar value for a holiday in oz!
You really cannot compare holiday prices when they are in different countries , I have an associate who spent six months in the south of France in a rented villa, thanks to his wife's demands, he said it was very pretty but the price was just obscene and he thought it was a complete waste of money, his wife loved it.
He loves Asia as he travels on a shoestring and wants value for money, and this lucky prick is loaded.

So IMHO the Gold Coast is good value for people who may not have the sense of adventure that us Thai fans have.

say what like it is a beautiful place to vacation.
Vacationed up there a lot with ex and family..had a time share and a job most of the time so did not consider it expensive. Depends of course how one spends ones time.
Used to live in high style next to beach in FNQ Cairns...now that WAS bloody beautiful ...not apparently for the ex though as she f..ked off cos she was bored...555
Agree Perth is expensive and a bit clinical/boring apart from the fun risk of getting eaten by a shark...full of whingeing Brits too...lol

There's a Gold Coast in Spain as well. Would give the place in Australia a run for its money, but so far apart, they don't compete.

The English love to put down Ozzie's, If I have heard the old joke about a prion sentence as required part of the immigration requirement once I have heard it a million times. Scratch the surface and you will find a frustrated Australian under every English man, and why not?

The climate is better, opportunities are better and generally the pay is better.
But the lifestyle is on another plane. Sure there are some ignoramus's and It has its fair share of stupids.

But generally people are decent, and honest, Thailand suits me for the moment, but I have rethought and I guess sometimes, regretted my decision to leave Aust many times.

If and when I do decide to go back to the west It sure as hell wont be in that old foks home, Bournemouth.

    Really ?

A quick google search tells me there is nothing there other than overpriced resorts.

As far as tourist type shite goes it does appear in anyway comparable to the Aussie Gold Coast.

They tell me about #3 and #4.

When they visit, sometimes for longer periods, they discuss the political correctness and attitudes (and this exist elsewhere than Oz of course) and the "don't take my photo asshole" when half of someone's head gets in a photo being taken of a building or on the beach.

And what's with the insurance needed now for those neighborhood christmas parties?

I could go on and on, but won't.

There you go see, never heard of 4, I can't imagine it's a nation wide issue or peculiar to Australia.
    #3 is a worldwide phenomenon.
Never heard about insurance for parties, has anyone else?

If I was in my 20's, had a tight budget, and the whole aim of the game when it came to a holiday was getting my dick wet, Thailand or Bali would be fair options.

But being older, the Gold Coast is my chosen longer holiday (3-4 weeks) spot where Mrs Worx and I go quite often. Here's a few reasons why:

There's about a million waterfront condos you can rent short term. Quite the place to eat a breakfast of prawns bought straight from a trawler that docked as you pulled into the marina carpark just after sunrise. Add a few hot crusty bread rolls and the local papers and life is good.

Local wildlife on a golf course, of which there's about a dozen of and they're about the same price (or cheaper) as good courses in Thailand. No caddies of course, but no fucking 5-6 balls of Thai's or Koreans holding the day up that Marshals are too scared to say anything to either.

Deep sea fishing. Not expensive to join in with any one of the many charters really and unlike Thailand, you will catch table quality fish 9 out of 10 times while on a boat that more than likely won't sink or isn't being captained by an unqualified drunk.

Nice scenery. It's great to just go for a walk or jump in the car and go for a drive, be it along the coast or up into the mountain ranges.

And speaking of driving, Avis rent Caprice's. After driving locally made Japanese shit-boxes with your right foot glued to the floor in Thailand for so long, getting behind the wheel of a proper car with a 6 liter V8 under the lid is pure joy. Add to this not having to do the thinking for every other driver within 100 meters and driving quickly becomes something to look forward to.

Then there's the huge array of great restaurants, clothes/shoe shops that cater to people above 5 foot 2, going to see a home game for the Suns or Titans, Jupiters Casino (a BIG plus), and the general sense of a non-chaotic lifestyle. Yep, it's a great place for a holiday.

Real-estate prices in that part of Oz have taken a hammering over the last few years.

I've been seriously thinking about buying an apartment there after I get my divorce finalised.

I really like Australia (I only take issue that it's a year round paradise - it's not). I would also consider spending a month or two on the QLD coast (and some time in Melbourne) if I could afford it (e.g. when retired). But Thailand is still my favorite overall. I also like the US and Canadian West Coast. Vancouver is beautiful and the drives down the coasts of both countries is excellent. People are friendly - similar to Aussies. Equally expensive though (Canada in particular)

^ Looks like the buffet of the revolving restaurant on top of Crowne Plaza?. Spectacular views if it is, especially during daylight looking West over mega-buck houses on the canals to the Hinterland, and during darkness looking North over Surfers.

Never been in a bad place when I have had the dollars to throw around. Never been in a good place when broke, NY has it all, if you have the cash. Not so good if you are in the street,, which I found myself once.

Q'land is not cheap and can think of a lot of better places to spend. Jim

The thing about your photos Koojo is that the Gold Coast hi rises always remind me of Benidorm (if you dont know it's a place on the Spanish costas that were once coveted but turned into an English white trash ghetto). The big difference is forget the hi rises and focus on the beautiful beaches of Gold Coast (Spain has no comparison).

Really? Barcelona is the local capital, where you can spend years and haven't seen yet everything worth to see. No V8 touring-cars, but F1. The Pyrenees are in striking distance, you can go skiing in the morning, and to the beach in the afternoon. No sharks or jellyfish in the sea, and the surf is a foot high at most. No need to supervise the kids every second. Many of the places are 2,000+ years old, with lots of facilities from Roman times. I googled and found that a 7 day holiday in a 4 star hotel with flight from UK can be had for £320 per person at the moment, that is not excessive.

Benidorm is at the White Coast, a long way off.

I must admit I like Barcelona. The Ramblas? is that right? with all the tapas bars. great food and you walk down to the Cristobal (Christopher Columbus) statue near the harbor.
