I just thought I'd post this for tose on this forum for those who say Thais are to stupid to do any real scientific research... although I note some of the names mentioned here are not Thai names. But anthow here it is:
Exposing ZnO Nanorods to Visible Light Removes Microbes, Researchers in Thailand Show
ScienceDaily (May 13, 2011) — The practical use of visible light and zinc oxide nanorods for destroying bacterial water contamination has been successfully demonstrated by researchers at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Nanorods grown on glass substrates and activated by solar energy have been found to be effective in killing both gram positive and gram negative bacteria -- a finding that has immense possibilities for affordable and environmentally friendly water purification techniques.
That's just outside Bangkok, in case you didn't know.
Here's the link to the article, in case you're interested.

Although it's a long way from this discovery to a practical system for removing harmful bacteria from water using only panels with ZnO nano-crystals deposited on an inert subsrate and only sunlight, still this is extremely interesing research at developing a low cost and simple method of killing harmful bacteria in contaminated water with the goal of providing clean and healthy water for rural areas where other more costly methods just can't be used due to the cost.
Good job AIT, and well done.
