    Thais and Science

I just thought I'd post this for tose on this forum for those who say Thais are to stupid to do any real scientific research... although I note some of the names mentioned here are not Thai names. But anthow here it is:

Exposing ZnO Nanorods to Visible Light Removes Microbes, Researchers in Thailand Show

ScienceDaily (May 13, 2011) — The practical use of visible light and zinc oxide nanorods for destroying bacterial water contamination has been successfully demonstrated by researchers at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Nanorods grown on glass substrates and activated by solar energy have been found to be effective in killing both gram positive and gram negative bacteria -- a finding that has immense possibilities for affordable and environmentally friendly water purification techniques.

That's just outside Bangkok, in case you didn't know.

Here's the link to the article, in case you're interested.
    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/05/110512091808.htm

Although it's a long way from this discovery to a practical system for removing harmful bacteria from water using only panels with ZnO nano-crystals deposited on an inert subsrate and only sunlight, still this is extremely interesing research at developing a low cost and simple method of killing harmful bacteria in contaminated water with the goal of providing clean and healthy water for rural areas where other more costly methods just can't be used due to the cost.
Good job AIT, and well done.

Just a few non-Thai names in there. Probably the ones getting paid to "advise".

The team, which also includes Dr. Oleg V Shipin, Ajaya Sapkota, Dr. Alfredo J Anceno, Mr. Sunandan Baruah and Ms. Mayuree Jaisai, is continuing its work on photocatalysis for use in water decontamination.

    some young achievers

Thai team bags 3 science prizes

    15/05/2011

Three students from Suratpittaya School in Surat Thani have taken home three prizes from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2011 - the world's largest high school science research competition - in the United States.

TRIPLE TREAT: Three students from Suratpittaya School in Surat Thani join other winners in celebrating awards from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2011 in Los Angeles—the world’s largest high school science research competition.

The team of Pornwasu Pongtheerawan, 16, Arada Sungkanit, 16, and Tanpitcha Phongchaipaiboon, 17, was named an Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award winner.

The trio received US$50,000 (about 1.51 million baht) for their "Bio-based Packaging Plastics from Fish Scale" project at the global science competition, which was held in Los Angeles from May 8-13

The team discovered that gelatin found in fish scales could be successfully used in modern day fish packaging.

Their discovery could have positive, long-term effects for the environment, said an Intel ISEF statement announcing the winners.

Apart from the young scientist award, the fish scale project also won the Grand Award in the Environmental Management category as well as the First Award in the same category with cash prizes of $5,000 and $3,000 respectively.

Awards were presented in 17 different categories at the Intel ISEF, which this year attracted more than 1,500 students who were selected from 443 affiliate fairs in 65 countries.

In addition, another team of three students from Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn's College in Phetchaburi won fourth place in the category of "engineering: materials and bioengineering".

Their project concerned the use of mucilage derived from lemon basil seeds as a coating substance for fruit preservation.

The three are Thanasup Gonmanee, Worrada Junmook and Narintadeach Charoensombut, all aged 18.

The science-savvy students from Suratpittaya School earlier won a gold medal at the International Science Olympiad in Texas and an environmentally friendly technology award from the North American College.

Don't get your hopes up, I know one or two Thai nanotech PhD students - most are Chinese (sorry, "Sino-Thai"); as with those brats in the school photo by Genghis61. Mind you, most of the European students and researchers are blagging it too.

I think we all know that in Thailand's universities there are a few well-educated youngsters from wealthy families who are tremendously capable.

The other 99.99% of the population have difficulty figuring out why driving a motorcycle after downing a bottle of scotch results in them waking up in hospital.
I see fish. They are everywhere. They don't know they are fish.
