Thais - I have heard it all now

    Are Thais insane?

I have been renting the same house for going on 4 years. I always pay the rent on time and have taken care of any repairs until now. I upgraded their crappy 5 amp electric from the pole to a real country's standard - well not really real world - 15 amps. I also upgraded the electric box from substandard screw fuses to real breakers. I also painted the interior of the place.

We have been blowing fuses with just some lights on because of old wiring, so Mrs. Chi rang the landlord. She said I will send my electrician over (her relative). Thsi wobbler shows up with two useless Thai guys They piddle around for about 1 1/2 hours. They redid the wiring in the room with the problem, replaced a worn out breaker and replaced two light bulbs. Problem solved.

This evening the Thai Chinese twat we rent from emails my missus. She tells us we owe a bill for 7000 baht for repairs.

What Thai electrician gets 7k for 1.5 hours work is my first question. My second is why is my responsibility to fix an electric problem in a house I do not own. Geeze, what if the roof blew off, would I have to pay to fix that?

I just called her and told her where to stick her bill.

This should play out real nice.

Make up a return bill for all the electric work you completed to make the house safe to live in.

Around 68,000.00 Baht sounds right to me mate and that means she owes you 61k.

I think you spoiled her by paying for previous repairs- now she'll say that she would have raised the rent (more) over the years if she had known that you were going to expect her to start paying for everything.

I was renting a top room on the beach at Koh Tao paying 30,000 baht a month because it was worth it, had stayed there a few times so they knew me well.

Anyway the handle broke off the top of the Bum Gun and had to be replaced so off I go to tune in the manager.

That day they fixed it and the manager fronts me up for 200 baht to replace it.

I told him in no uncertain terms what I thought about that, I mean what was the tosser thinking ? that I broke the foker on purpose.

Anyway dumb fok just lost my business and I'll stay somewhere else next time.

The mind boggles at the mentality of some of those dudes.

Good thinking. Chi should not only tell his landlady to stuff her bill, he should move elsewhere. Or at least threaten to. Will get her attention. Always worked for me when I got petty crap like this from landlords.

Ive stayed in some apartments where the security fob to enter through the
security door has stopped working after a few weeks of use. They insisted that
I purchase a new key to enter the building.

If I had lost the key fair enough but I still had her original faulty fob.She wanted
300baht so I could gain access to the building.

I think this is a common scam to gain very little and lose a lot more custom.

I left three months early to find a decent place

Never let the locals fix anything. Butters is a do it yourself guy. Should have called him.

Ridiculous. You owe nothing for the repairs. They should be apologizing for the inconvenience of the faulty electrics.

It sure was an inconvenience. No electric in the kitchen and dining room for about 8 days. Our stove has an electric start and without lights the missus could not cook for me.

Sad thing is it is a nice place - it is a huge place with real closets in the bedrooms and all the doors are farang height. Big rooms too - my bedroom is 20 x 20 feet.

It says we are responsible for wear and tear and minor repairs. Dodgy electric is far from minor.

Now Mrs. Chi told her to stick the bill where the sun don't shine. She just rang her and started that nonsense of "Your Thai, you should side with me." My missus told her she is married to me and she sides with me on everything! The landlord is a Thai Chinese CNUT!

Chi, you should have something mentioned in your lease agreement covering small repairs up to a certain pre-agreed amount and anything over that amount should be paid by the landlord.

Then there is the fact that people should be fair and it seems you have been a model tenant.

Maybe a good example to others to make sure all of these important points have been ticked off when you sign a lease/ rental agreement.

Yep agree that you are being taken for a ride. However Electricians as I have observed regard themselves as highly skilled and as such charge accordingly. They don't work for daily rates but put a price per unit on things ie 500baht a point. In your case you have displayed a willingness to pay for things that really were the landlords responsibility and as we all know in South East Asia kindness is regarded as a weakness to be taken advantage of. Trying to play your wife against you is a normal occurrence, however it regularly works as Thais hate to upset one of their own.Good on your wife for making her aware that she knows who pays for the butter on her bread.

....what if they run into the same illogical problems elsewhere? The truer remedy - don't rent property in Thailand.

    Thai Chinese CNUT!
just to balance things out a bit.

my neighbour, a thai chinese man, went away for 3 months, a business/holiday trip to south america. he left me the keys to his car, a classic benz from the seventies, and asked if i could start it every week and give it a run every now and again. this i did.

on his return last week he thanked me for looking after his car and presented me with a 500gb hard drive loaded to the brim with uk and us tv documentaries and series and a little black box media player gizmo thingy to attach to my tv so that i can watch all this stuff on my tv.

not all thai chinese are cnuts. in fact most of them are not.
