I'm a Brit but have nothing against Americans.
Spent time with them when in the Army, visited the US six or seven times and honestly did not meet one who I did not get on with.
Perhaps I was just lucky, but while sometimes accents were difficult to decipher, I always found them hospitable, generous, friendly and very good company.
Since living in LOS however, I have met a couple who I avoid like the plague.
Maybe this place attracts the worst elements - it certainly does from the UK.
:UK:
If I'd started a thread eliciting positive aspects of American people or culture, it would have sunk off the first page of The Lounge after a couple of pages - not because there are no positive things to say about America/American people - but because we all fucking thrive on the negative.
If I didn't have a point when I started this thread then I have one now.
Why are Americans so sensitive to criticism? They are probably the country most deserving of it, but they just can't handle it. In this thread we have had a number of Brits criticizing their own country, but the only American to speak out against America is Ray Carey. That says a lot, don't ya think? :rolleyes:Quote:

Anyone that stands up for other peoples rights in front of a bulldozer that eventually runs them over is a hero IMO. Ray Carey is far from that.Quote:

Yet you probably refer to people speaking out against the war in Iraq as "Un-American". All a matter of context I suppose. :rolleyes:Quote:

Rachel Corrie falls into the "useful idiot" catagory. The bulldozer operator for one, did not see her and two - what the hell was she thinking anyway? :mid:
Bullshit.Quote:

Here's some criticism for you- are you really that dense?
The shit-slinging never ends here- it flows in a constant stream from the same posters, and a little of it goes a long way.
How many times can someone insult you or your nation (often in a context where it's completely uncalled for) before you will take issue with it?
OK- I'm going to talk shit to you over and over and over again- are you going to smile and remain in a bent-over position the entire time I do it, or are you eventually going to tell me to 'fuck off'? Please note, though, when you do actually tell me to 'fuck off' (deservedly so) I'm going to let you know how 'sensitive' to criticism you are- hey, we're just havin' a laugh, right, mate?
Go ahead and say what you want about where you're from- it's your homeland, after all- what you DON'T see (and it's a pretty salient point you managed to miss) is that the Americans aren't constantly spouting crap about YOUR country, where they're expected to stand idly by while you insult theirs (and god forbid we defend themselves we're labeled as 'sensitive').
Turns out there was an American citizen shot dead on the Mavi Marmara too. :mid:
Nothing pro-American & anti-Brit here, merely a question of numbers. But Pattaya would be a better place if there were more yanks & less poms. :tieme:
Then again I saw the most boorish behaviour from Germans in Hua Hin and the Russians in Pattaya.
Are a lot of American travelers clueless, not doubt, but no more than other countries. I see notes that some bar girls won't deal with Arabs, haven't heard that about Americans.
I saw a German get totally nude right in front of a string of Thais selling on the walkway to a Hua Hin beach, when there was a bathroom no more than 15 feet away.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it the Brits and Aussies who were stupid enough to be caught on camera during the protests advocating the overthrow of the government?
Speaking of traveling foreigners, what about the English hooligans who are trying to sneak into South Africa to disrupt the World Cup?
Lastly, you ask why we don't agree with you. When you piss on my country you piss on me. If you gave concrete examples of bad behaviour by Americans, hell yes I would agree, but blanket statements, not a chance.
