    Rabbits

I now have a bloody albino rabbit.

The missus was looking over my shoulder whilst I was browsing the classifieds section on TV, she spotted a rabbit and wanted to know how much. Stupidly I opened the advert to find it was free and needed a good home before the owner left town. Bugger, she wasn't happy that it might be homeless and made me drive to Thonburi to get it.

I have just spend a couple of hours making a barrier/pen for it in the corner of the house. Pretty big enclosure. Once it knows where it's toilet is I will let it roam a bit more freely.

GOt to say though they are a bit shite. The missus is happy and a little bit scared since the miserable beast is a bit unsettled and growls at her.

    ANybody else ever had rabbits.

Interestingly enough they appear to be illegal in Queensland Australia as pets

Sure, for dinner after hunting them with a semi-automatic shotgun.

Rabbits are crap pets and they turn into furry cardboard in the depths of winter.

They need a lot of cleaning out unless they have a good sized pen.

If they aren't happy they can dig their way to freedom in about five minutes flat.

Male rabbits can be vicious bastards - not cuddly at all.

They need something like wood to chew on otherwise their teeth grow too long and they won't be able to eat.

And if you want to fully understand the expression 'breed like rabbits' put a male and female together.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

I've made her a 4m2 pen so it's fairly large.

He is trained already to shit and piss in a litter tray which is a bonus. Might take a few days to get him into the routine again. After that it should be pretty much like having a cat.

If it can climb trees and catch mice I'll be well impressed.

By the way do you ever see rabbits wild in Thailand?

When Mrs D first came to England and saw them nibbling grass by the side of the road she couldn't understand why people weren't out shooting them.

I had to explain that stopping to shoot rabbits by the side of the M3 wasn't the done thing.

I'm pretty sure I did that in Chiang Mai/Rai already. However, I was working on my trusted travel advice at the time "don't ask"

I used to raise Lops. Had one trained to a kitty box, lived in the house and fetched the paper. He thought he was a dog but the dogs knew he was a rabbit so they ate him.

Rabbits are great on the farm, in cages, raised for resale or food. Great food. They are a real pain in the ass as pets and can make a house stink fast.

I had a rabbit as a pet -- one of those ill-considered Easter gifts from my grandad. It never allowed me to pick it up, would scratch at me with his back feet.

You're miles ahead if you get it to use a litter box -- mine just had an outdoor coop.

They aren't much trouble, but then they aren't very interesting, either. The only pet rabbits I've seen that actually acted like pets were raised directly from the litter so that they didn't reject human touch.

I prefer my pit bull and my schnauzer.

    My advice:

Feed it chillies instead of carrots,
this way you don't need to spice it on X-Mas.

I'd like to get a couple of rabbits for breeding.
Should sell well, and keep the missus busy selling rabbit-stew on the market.

Rabbits are shit pets, they constantly crew stuff, they shit everywhere (especially when scared), they freak out and bite, they smell of urine, they dig tunnels, they attract preditors, all in all shit pets.

Bout the only worse pet is a chin chilla (sp) they like to piss at you out from their cage as you walk by.

Take no notice of them Squirrel.

My kids had a pet rabbit and she was lovely. We didn't pen her, but sbe couldn't get out of the backyard. She dug a burrow where she would hide from the neighbourhood cats, but didn't ever try to escape from it.

She used to follow my kids around and would come and stretch out beside them on the sofa when they were watching telly.

She lived until she was about six and then got a skin cancer of the face, from the sun, no doubt.

You are only allowed to keep fancy rabbits as pets in Australia but she didn't seem to be all the fancy, although bigger than a wild rabbit.

    From wikapedia

"They do sneeze audibly, sometimes from the fine dust in their bath. If a chinchilla feels threatened, a high and loud bark will be heard, much like a squirrel can bark. A last resort will involve the chinchilla standing on hind legs and emitting both a bark and a stream of urine. Sometimes, chinchillas will emit a series of loud, hoarse barks that serve to warn other chinchillas of potential danger."
