Come to think of it, I did enter a saloon. I went to see Johnny Heinhold in the Last Chance, and I went to borrow money. And right here is another phase of John Barleycorn. Saloon-keepers are notoriously good fellows. On an average they perform vastly greater generosities than do business men. When I simply had to have one thousand baht, desperate, with no place to turn, I went to Johnny Heinhold. Several years had passed since I had been in his place or spent a cent across his bar. And when I went to borrow the one thousand baht I didn't buy a drink, either. And Johnny Heinhold let me have the one thousand baht without security or interest.

He'd been such a good customer and by then was a good mate, that I didn't even have to think about it..he ran up about 18,000 over the course of the fortnight and promptly paid it back. A week or so later he asked if he could run up another tab to which I agreed..

And if I ever see him again, the cnut owes me a beer or two..

Depends on the situation. If I know the person and he's employed I'll lend him cash to see him through. Shit, it's happened to me and a mate saw me okay but I didn't rest until I'd payed it back.

As for just another drinking partner at a bar, generally that would be a no-no.

You can't say yes or no to this question, there are too many variables.

The one and only time I ever lent money to a foreign guy in Thailand I laid it out pretty well.

    1. Pay me back when you are saying you will.
    2. Don't EVER ask me for money again, whatever the reason.

    It worked out fine.

    Anyone ever lent and lost?

    No.

    Never lent, so never lost.

I have been asked to loan and *give* money.

    I say, "no."

    "I'm an English teacher."

Ask other people, or go to the Embassy or Consulate: at the Embassy and Consulate there is a sign:

As joe moer, collateral, unless it's a guy you have known for some time. At the end of the day you can never be sure of getting it back . Usually it's, can you "give" me . If it's for boose only, then ,,,,unless you're a friend . It's usually why they are broke in the first place.

Does that mean that the ability to stay long term in Thailand highly depends on your booze vs. available income ratio?

    I agree by the way.

Lent to a farang once here, my so called best friend, he left Thailand and didn't repay me. If I ever see him again I will extract the debt from him...

I've been asked by bargirls who I have known for a long time and by some so called "normal" Thai girls. Never agreed to it and it has always caused a permanent rift for some odd reason. They seem to take the refusal personally...odd.

lent a friend the equivalent of about 400 quid once, forgot about it, was a nice suprize to get it back a few years down the line, magic

watched an irish guy get into a thai family who ran a beer bar, near where i did on koh chang for nigh on 1 million baht, girls and booze, paying his rent food etc, he paid that bill, no probs, then took them for 600,000 the next time, last seen on khao san begging for beer, hope the cnut is dead, even though his drunken antics where a fine way to wile an afternoon at the bar

Borrowed half a million baht once for a week, the difference between hanging out with the rich and the poor, although I am in the later.

I've lent loads. But I've always assumed it was a donation. Occasionally I've been proved wrong.

I've also had loans from people & been extremely grateful for them.

BTW, why does race come into this???

    Just joking.

Actually I am living in a very picturesque village near to the base. No GI's any more though.

I personally discrimate against certain accents, that's all.

Something guilty in those scouse and brummie accents.

If a brummie / scouse says to me something like ''Alright I'm just going to the shops'', to me that just sounds like them saying ''I didn't do it, honestly, I just wanted to get sorted...''
    Etc.
