French citizens died for the creation of the USA. Have you no gratitude for them? Have you no shame when you speak disparagingly of them or their country?

    Have you, sir, no honour?
America is a nation, I'm just a citizen. We like the French, I like the French. You're talking about one issue some years ago. The Brits vs. the French have centuries of issues.

Seppo is offensive to me. And that's why this exchange started. Other than Limey and Pom - very tame handles - there is no derogatory term that I'm aware of. Although horse face might do. When you rank on my country you rank on my family, two of whom volunteered to come to your aid and died. As far I know all we seppo nations came to your aid. After all y'all are the mother ship.

All those you mentioned have enough character to be stereotyped. What's goin on in NZ? Nothing, right? Canada? Nothing. Maybe it's not so bad if your country is one that makes enough noise to be noticed. After all, you're nobody till you have enemies.

My question still stands, however. You expect people to be grateful to the US and Americans because of the things done in the past. Well, doesn't that apply to you also? Do you arbitrarily set a cut-off date when it is ok to not be thankful or indebted anymore?

I remember when I was a kid there was some kerfuffle or other between the NZ and French governments, might have been over the Rainbow Warrior or French Nuclear testing but can't recall correctly right now.

What I do remember is that there were calls to boycott French restaurants, products, and protests where loafs of French bread was broken. Nothing quite as silly as renaming a potato product however.

But I also recall thinking how utterly ridiculous the whole thing was given that those running the restaurants, selling the products, or otherwise benefitting from them where, invariably, New Zealanders and therefore the ones being harmed most directly. Mental.

That was vastly overhyped by the media. I never saw an actual instance of this.
Most of what is reported in the press is drivel.

On March 11, 2003, Representatives Robert W. Ney (R-Ohio) and Walter B. Jones, Jr.North Carolina) declared that all references to French fries and French toast on the menus of the restaurants and snack bars run by the House of Representatives would be removed. House cafeterias were ordered to rename French fries to "freedom fries". This action was carried out without a congressional vote, under the authority of Ney's position as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, which oversees restaurant operations for the chamber. The simultaneous renaming of French toast to "freedom toast" attracted less attention.

I presume you're referring directly to the events/protests in NZ? Actually to be honest neither did I (see an instance). In fact the only 'protest' I did see was film on the news of some mung bean breaking loaves of French bread which also supports what you're saying.

Can you recall the specifics, when and where it was? My memory of it's a little hazy, can't even remember how old I was at the time.

No, I'm referring to the 'freedom fries' kerfuffle. I'm afraid I'm totally drawing a blank on the other.

Speculation but knowing your approximate age, would think it was in the 70s when NZ organizations and government were protesting against French nuclear testing in French Polynesia.

^Yeah that's what I was thinking, 70's or early 80's. Thinking about it again now I'm pretty sure it wasn't over the Rainbow Warrior so you're no doubt sopt-on re: the testing angle.

Sorry to take this fine thread off topic but I have a friend interested in bringing his Panama Hat factory from the US to SEA. Interested?
