The Name thing again...what do people call you?

There are a large numbers of pubs and restaurants around where I live, and last night I got to thinking. At the restaurants that employ Thai staff, I am always called 'farang'. At the restaurants that employ Vietnamese staff, I am always called by my given name.

Why is that do you think? I've come to the conclusion that the Thai staff are just too lazy to bother asking what my name is and then using it. Whereas, the Vietnamese staff seem to go out of their way to find out what my name is, and make a point of remembering it.

Now I'm wondering if this true in Vietnam? Anybody?

Oh, as an aside. In my street everybody calls me by my name. Kids, parents, grandparents. All except one lovely little boy who is about three - he always calls me 'daddy'...which is a bit disconcerting given that his mother has not finished school yet!

'Sir' in the higher class establishments. Possibly 'you' or 'mister' in the coffee shops.

No-one knows my name in my neighbourhood and I don't know anyone elses. And that's the way I like it.

We have about 10 regular Thai establishments since moving here 2 years ago. Bars/lounges, restaurants, shops, market stalls. We are friends with the staff in virtually all of them. All have called me by my first name since day one (having asked me or my GF what my name is).

Somebody call me 'kunt' last week. I overtook him on the inside and he got very irate and opened the window of his red Mini Cooper S and called me the c word. I didn't have the heart to point out that he was driving a gay car. Obviously repressed sexual urgings manifesting themselves inappropriately.

Yes i got alot of that, and in laos also. in laos goin up through the stics from paks-am ,,in small villages 20 kids shouting ooooohhhhh farang, farang. Apparently it means frenchman but not sure about this. The kids were cute and innocent with great smiles. In thailand it gets to be too much at times. It almost sounds racist . Sometimes with the older ones i would retaliate by saying ""No, no fuking farang ,,, i do have a name" Inclined to think it's pure ignorance in thailand when even a so called educated person uses the same term. Fuk em.

On the rare occasion I leave this chair, I get called Jase as I only go to Nobi's or the 'Clock and they're run by civilised people.

Another good reason to live in Singapore. May not know your name but you can be sure you're the subject of a good bit of neighborhood gossip.

I'm in Indonesia. Some that don't know me call me 'bule' (boolay).
It's the Indonesian term for a white guy.
To my face, if they don't know me, it's either Pak (Mr/Sir) or om (Uncle). Both are common and polite ways to address someone older that yourself or are used in a formal situation.
Those that know me call me a few different things.
The Chinese population either by my real name or the same using Mandarin.
The latter being because I have the Chinese simplified script for my name tattooed on my right arm.
The Muslim population call me Mas Fred. Mas being the Javanese word for brother.
I don't like to be called Pak as I should be. Too bloody formal.
Be happy dudes. It's a lot more fun than crying.
