I wouldn't read much into it. It's a combination of things usually; familiarity with farangs in general, how you behave, education etc. etc. Just give em a big shit eatin grin and they will treat you fine.

Most Thai’s will address me with,..”Q-me” (for excuse me). The ones that know my name will try to pronounce it,……they get the first syllable, but the second syllable seems to confuse them

Why is that do you think? I've come to the conclusion that the Thai staff are just too lazy to bother asking what my name is and then using it. Whereas, the Vietnamese staff seem to go out of their way to find out what my name is, and make a point of remembering it.

Now I'm wondering if this true in Vietnam? Anybody?

Oh, as an aside. In my street everybody calls me by my name. Kids, parents, grandparents. All except one lovely little boy who is about three - he always calls me 'daddy'...which is a bit disconcerting given that his mother has not finished school yet!

I think it is called "IGNORANCE" ...in the three years that I first came here, my Witch of a mother in law always refferred to me as "The Farang" it is amazing how quickly they learn your name, learn to use PLEASE and learn to use THANK YOU! (no, not in English, in thai.. if someone does something for you I was always taught to say thanks...it's about time these fuckers learned the same)

and, should you want a favour.. i.e. a lift somewhere "GET THE FUCKING DOG TO TAKE ME" is not always the best way to get a positive result!

Especially after you hear them asking your wife "GET THE FARANG TO TAKE US IN THE CAR TO THE CITY"....and the reply being "TELL THEM TO GET FUCKED!" they learn believe me.....later you get the Wai and the please and the thank you..."Kop Khun Mak Mak" - I don't need the "grovelling" just the acceptance that someone went out of their way to assist you!, a simple nod or a thank you will do, not a bunch of flowers...not that they would think about that out here! it is all about manners! We British (sorry ENGLISH - (Welsh People are rude,) are polite)

Could be worst, I'm Khun Ted

Regardless Klongy seems the only person addressed as "farang" where you go. I can't get my head round this? Asking a person their name in my experience is as common as asking where someone is going in Thailand.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: you're an arsehole Pat...what gives you the impression that these places are cheap, low class establishments? Just because they happen to be on the other side of the river , where you have probably never been...

I am very familiar with the 'other side of the river' thanks, and also familiar with those cheap-ass eating places that you patronise, what do you expect? Them to address you ''Sir'' or ''Kru'' ?

They'll always ridicule fat, thai-ophile farangs like you.

    I've said my piece.
