Miggs is right they change what they want on a whim, one officer can demand or say seemingly whatever they want. Went recently to the local office just to report address 90 day in and out normally. We were processed up to the point of seeing the officer (arsehole) behind the desk who then more or less told us to piss off and go into Bangkok to do it. Er but we phoned first to see if we could do it here and you said OK no ploblum and the lady at the desk just took our forms and said OK too, go away was his reply. There was only on other falang in the whole place. Went into bkk seething and were in and out in five mins.
When I first applied for an extension at the first office I was first told my visa had expired, it had not, then that there was no bank letter, there was and finally told to go away and come back in two weeks which was changed to go to another office as we don't do extensions here. This despite giving me the form to fill in and having a sign outside in Englsih stating that they did give extensions. No way would I give one of these fvckers a bribe as many have told me they do, I'd rather not get an extension.

In bkk which is why we phoned first to see if we could go to the much nearer office, said yes then yes when we got there -then no. They should really know what they are talking about but it seems they don't sometimes. Rang the immigration helpline once with a fairly simple querry-25 mins down the line and being passed to four different people nobody knew and we were given another number to ring, which nobody ever answered. I think what pisses people off is the constant changes to the rules and within that the seeming freedom that individual officers and offices have of interpreting them as they wish, confusion all round can be the result.

If you are on a yearly extension then you can only get a 90 day report from the same office.
So in your case the head honcho was correct and his minors were wrong and so was the info you got from Bangkok. Enough to piss anyone off.

The system is crap, the officers badly informed and no attempt is made to pass any info on to the public using their services.
It would be in their best interests to have an updated list of basics requirements written in proper English on their website.
Why the fcuk they don't do this is beyond me.

Their website is a disgrace, full of errors and bad English.
How many farangs pass through their doors each day who would be willing to help for free.

And this is why after 8yrs i have now decided to just get a non immigrant multi entry and forget about the hoops , just go over the border every 90 days and then a trip to the UK and see some family. I have been married to a Thai woman for 12yrs in the UK and Thailand living its just jumping through hoops where ever you are ,its like a punishment.

Why don't you just hire an agent to take care it? They will get all the paperwork and all you have to do is show up once a year. They will do the 90 day reports as well. All for a couple of thousand baht a year.
Why do you people get so excited about something that can be made to just go away with a small amount of cash?

I think preparation is a good idea but in Thailand you can never be sure what they want from you.

Compare the hassles you have to go through in Thailand to get a residence permit for just one year evebn when you are married and earning decent money to how easy it is in the west. My wife got three years for first application and when that is over next will be permanent residence. Work permit is now included in the residence permit, at least for spouses, so we don't even have to go to the labour department.

If Thailand does not make me feel more welcome in the not so distant future I doubt I would like to jump through the hoops.

A better comparison might be other developing countries, don't you think? They all have about the same requirements. Thailand used to not even require you to show up, but there was so many people abusing the system, we all now pay the price.
Oh, and it takes some 16 weeks to get a work visa for Australia.

Not excited but why pay anyone when it is meant to be 'simple' as long as you meet the requirements? I must say that the new drop in place on the MRT is absolutely fantastic with polite staff who seem to know what they are doing and hopefully are not looking for bribes just to do the job they are paid to do. Like miggs I was given two new bits of paper on the last extension and was advised not to bother with what it said-just sign them. What will it be this year I wonder, photos of you and the mrs in bed maybe or having yer fingerprints taken?

This is the major complaint from many farangs and if they publish more details they would find life easier for themselves as well as for the farangs.

There is a whole section on "documents required" in the immigration website but none of the links work.

    Almost.
One of the requirements now is a picture of you and the Mrs sitting on the bed together.

It just makes you wonder how immigration think.
It is supposed to show that your marriage is still intact.
Well after forging a marriage certificate and bribing two neighbors to say that you both live in the same house, sitting on the bed together for 5 seconds is hardly a difficult task.

Are you serious? my mate has changed from married ext to retirement as it's less hassle. Last time they sent him home for pics with wife which he went back with. They then told him the pics were no good as they have to show them outside the door with the number showing, so all the way back home again. The bed one I never heard of, but I did hear something about having to get your marriage certs verified in case they might be fake.

Amen to that. Can't stand dealing with bureaucrats either here or in England. I find the bloke at the Thai Consulate in Birmingham to be the exception to the rule. No fuss at all. As for the rest of them....treat them like mushrooms etc.
Anyway, nice to go and see family and friends for a few weeks every 15 months. Makes a nice exotic holiday for the girlfriend too

I appreciate Thetyim and his posts, he does indeed provide interesting info, we may or may not disagree at times, but that is part and parcel.

I found his immigration posts useful, I also found his summary of the useless immigration offices quite true and well observed.

I am not having a go at him in the least, just rattling his cage a bit to get him to see that the way things work is a mess!

I am not throwing toys, and I am SURE Thetyim doesn't need YOU to argue his case, he seems well capable of that on his own!

What he says at the time, I do not doubt is 100% correct, but what I am saying, these fuckers keep changing everything, and you do not find out until you get there!

We all have to report our lowly selves every 90 days, why don't they simply hand out an update to the visa requirements then?

No that would be too fucking easy!

No wonder it takes almost 2 hours to get the marriage extension while you fuck around to banks photographers and fucking photocopiers!

(Personally, I think they love it.. they get to sit on their arses while you go hoop jumping, and they get a good laugh at fucking off the farang.. it is the only door left open to them as they are not smart enough to do it any other way! - just look at everything they do.. it's a third world country..they are having a go at the colonialists - they are trying to get a foot on the ladder in the only way they know, corruption and a power fetish! - Imagine getting into a room with their TOP HONCHO - and in a perfect world you spoke perfect Thai, imagine how he would crawl through the cracks in the floor as you pulled them apart for the way they did their work? Take any institution, any business, in fact absolutely ANYTHING here, and reasoned it out.. without the Kreng Jai shit and the loss of face... being able to CRITICIZE openly...they'd cut their own throats in 10 fucking minutes!)

Al I am saying is that things here at immigration change AD HOCK...nothing more...

Find an employer that has a decent HR dept and there will be no hoops to jump through, only time ive had to deal with anything to do with Thai bureaucracy is a leisurely drive into BKK to sign the processed documents.
