I left school at 15, but now at 56 I find myself studying at tertiary level to keep up with the changes in my job.
The kids coming up behind me are pretty smart and well educated. Knowledge is not a bad thing to have, but creating a workforce full of educated idiots is not the way to go. These days every second man and his dog has some kind of a degree, but half of them still end up sweeping floors or working in a factory.

Yes in my opinion. I've had a good working life, worked hard physically, and retired early. The biggest asset to anyone working is to join a pension scheme from dot one. It worked for me. I only completed secondary education. How many Uni people can say they retired at 53 ?

This happens to me occasionally when posting. Not the "post reply button" at all. But sometimes if I hit two keys together when typing it just posts it instead of coming out as the regular typo. I always wondered if it was something peculiar to my keyboard or computer or if others might have this problem?

Sounds kinda like I did it,
I like Panda went on my own at 15 and got into the trades where my aptitude took me and it was great and I learned to do many things skillfully and joined a few unions.
After I sobered up and took shit more seriously at 48 and hooked up with work at a better pace I was able to work only the jobs I wanted and only for part of a year and ride around on my motorcycle the rest of the year and then at 58 I hung it pretty well up, except for the jobs that were offered that were to good to pass up and of a short duration.
Like my last real job of work,,5 weeks at a gross of $15.000. But that was 16 years ago.

when I was at tech college for my trade , with me was an older bloke who was an electrical supervisor on an FPSO whose company was paying for him to attend the instrumentation courses - toward the end of the second year he was asked by one of teachers as to why he did not pursue an elec eng degree - his reply was that he earned 110k a year and 4 years of uni would cost him 500k in lost wages and then entry level elec engineers were earning 40-50k a year.

May be true for some trades but in general that is just a load of rubbish.

    Why is that?
When I was a kid I was leader of a labor gang and was paid a bit more per hour for that.
I had as one hand, a guy who had a BA and was more than a few years older than I and working for less money an hour as a general labor,, so what was his advantage to have a BA and work for a dude quite a few years his junior for less money per hour??

Maybe another instance of "Educated beyond his intelligence" as we see so often proven on forums.

well, you quoted first hand experience initially, so you obviously are impressed by a single case to prove your point

that is one of the problems of not having a good education, a belief that what you come across personally is applicable to the rest of society

I wouldn't shoot at six grizzlies with a crappy Walther PPK- it will pinch the skin between your thumb and forefinger- I would recommend this thing- .50 cal with a 2" barrel- even a little kid can wield it- the only problem is that it holds just five rounds, so you have to do a little fast foot-work while you reload for bear #6:

I don't have time to read the whole thread.....but....

Is going to a university a complete waste of time and money?
I guess it can't be, I've ended up with an expat job in the oil and gas industry in Thailand and a salary that I am comfortable with.....

....but then again, I didn't go to university......

works for some, doesn't work for others.

Interesting piece of marketing. A "bear attacks of the century" booklet. Guess one can never be too careful. Shit happens.

Wonder if they have "Killer whale attacks of the century" model?
