    Thais Geography and some reasons.

I often make a joke about the average Thais knowledge of the geography, countries, maps etc.

I got a bit of a shock today, and I felt a bit pissed about this.

Christmas is coming and I thought it would be a nice idea to buy my son (8) an atlas.

He often asks about where this is and where that country is.

    Now the fun begins!

Firstly, have you ever tried to find a decent atlas here...I was shocked!

I wanted to ask this question, as I never really thought about it until I "THOUGHT ABOUT IT"

Have you ever noticed how you cannot find ANYTHING here regarding CRICKET!!!

I quite fancied getting my son a cricket set , its a good game, but then as I started to look around, there is absolutely NOTHING!
Then I thought back...have you ever seen a cricket match on Thai TV?.. I haven't.

I went into the sports section of Robinsons today, and they thought I was either on meth or was talking about baseball...I was trying to explain to the sales guy, using my "PS2 Guitar Hero" guitar, (That we bought for a present) in a swinging action as to how the game was played - he was totally fucked, obviously Thais don't play ball games with plastic PS2 Guitars...but seriously, any one seen cricket gear here?

I found one in that bookshop that is usually in great disarray, the one inside Robinsons, great books but filed in an order by a lunatic!

It was the Times World Atlas...almost 5000 baht...cough...fuck that!

I found a couple of Thai ONLY, no english, "SCRIBBLE" type atlas books, where countries were "roughly drawn"... with things like Prahtet Africa...so I gave those a miss.

Then I found a selection of 3 or 4 different globes of the world, the first one, (1200 Baht) the two halves didnt align properly, so Africa had a rather jutting penninsular near the equator. and it was another "Prahtet Africa" job.

The only decent globe was almost 2000 Baht, it had the English and Thai, was about the size of a football! Plastic crap.

Is it any wonder why the kids dont know where anywhere is!!!

    don't know where you are . . .

Atlas: Sengho have A4-size student atlas books for about 250-300 baht I regularly give them to friends' kids.

also big wall maps approx 1.2mx1m, 4'x3' for under 300 that are in Thai/English.

I have one (where else) on the wall here in our living room, adults and kids who visit often head straight for it; once they get over the shock of this country's size in relation to eg China, Canada etc it's quite an attraction as I've got little post-it stickers showing where I'm from, other countries I've visited, where my family is scattered around the world.

As for a globe, i hadn't considered that, maybe as step #2, for now the world can remain flat. Though one girl thought it extremely funny that New Zealand was banished to the bottom rh corner - like wearing the dunce's cap and being sent to stand in the corner!
Know I've mentioned this in another post, but a friend's wife tells people I'm from 'Landland' - 'you know, all the land places Ireland, England, Switzerland' and so on. All the same, aren't they?

Can't get a serious face on long enough to offer a correction, and husband (an Englander) said don't even try.

Ok, cheers, but to be honest, kids do not curl up in bed and read wall maps...they are simply stuck on the wall like a poster, and become an ornament,
I wanted a book where we could look at, a bit , you know what kids are like, they like books given the chance, no one spends much time looking at maps on a wall...it takes too much effort!

I will probably get the printer out and copy some shit from google Earth..

Mate, they have no idea what cricket is, and why should they? Do we know about takraw in the west? Get real missis.

The atlas-geography thing is another matter; tried getting a decent Issarn map around here for ages...have Itchycock, north, south Thailand, but Issarn in Buriram - no chance. All shops enquired in thoguht I was strange for asking.

MM, buy him a laptop, bookmark google earth in a browser, show him how to use the aforementioned technological wizardry. Experience the warm glow of parenthood, after a job well done. Drink more alcohol.

The weird thing is, they have basketball, tennis, football, ping pong, table tennis, golf, virtually every game, but have you EVER seen cricket?

I know the Thais have a few sports not recognised in the west, but why the hell is there virtually no coverage of cricket here?

Isn't it about time we got some Priests who apparently are invincible to any form of attack because of their amulets, and then had a shooting contest...an Olympic Waste The Phra.. I think it would be better than cricket, I would love to see them "zinging" bullets with their bare hands...Imagine the TV ratings...

I simply thought cricket was a bit more fair!

That was what i meant about a book, no pissing around with electrical appliances when you are pissed, simply get the book out in bed, tell him to find America, then go to sleep, if, as luck would have it, he may indeed find it in the morning, after which, you feel so much better than the night before.

A pat on the back, and all is well!

When he finds where America is, you can retire to bed with a beer the next night and entice him to find Guatamala....it will take him ALL night.

BUT! if you use a wall poster...they will be standing next to the wall for 5 hours shouting "DADDY IS THIS IT!" and you won't get any sleep! and you will make a complete arse of yourself as, being pissed you will not be able to read the names on the chart..and will stumble around like a daft twat in the cold..a book is much better!

Kids are so funny, mine has this mania with GTA and these fucking terrible RAP songs, that is fair enough, but for whatever reason, he insists on sending me every single RAP song he downloads via Skype, and he is only in the next room....the minute I see this shit downloading, I switch the router off and cry "technical problems" I don't mean it in a bad way, but there really is a limit to listening to that SHITE!

I haven't but someone has here in Thailand. Must be cricket gear for sale somewhere. All you have to do is call the Thai ICC office to find out where.

The Thailand national cricket team is the team that represents the country of Thailand in international cricket matches. They have been an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2005, having been an affiliate member between 1995 and 2005.

Because here never became part of the British Empire, where cricket was/is played, because the Brit army thought it easier to use the Thais to stop the French coming from Vietnam into Malaysia and Burma than do it themselves. The Thais are right-proud of it too

I wasn't getting into post war politics for a change, i simply wanted to buy a cricket bat...I have a load of fucking stumps called Somchai nearby,

I don't even need a corker, I just wanted to introduce my son into the game.

and you say Thailand has a CRICKET TEAM....do they hide for a living?

I suppose, just to interest the locals, we could organize a game where the local monks are given a cricket bat, some lucky amulets, and the bowler is given a Thompson SMG, and the monk is defending his wicket!...surely that would draw an audience!

LBW would be funny, that is supposing the amulets didn't work of course!

Yeah. They share a room with the Thai National Ice Hockey team. Miggins, I know you cricket fans can't get enough of it but really, it is not the most popular sport in the world. If you asked for a cricket bat in the US you would end up with some sort of insect swatter.

Regarding cricket, you would have been in the same situation in Germany.

Mmmm and if I asked for a football in the US from these idiot Americans, i would be given some egg shaped piece of crap, forced to wear a fucking space suit, run 5 metres and get jumped on by about 20 of the fuckers...no thanks!

It isn't a game, it's a break from their TV adverts...who the fuck thought up American Football, it must be the worst game ever played!

And Baseball...rounders was a lot better, and we didn't need to dress up like a bunch of stripey pricks to play it!

Basketball...they are fucked there too... all the blacks are much taller, much more athletic...what is left for white America...Mac donalds Eating championships?
