I'm a beer head Zapster. Don't touch the hard stuff though. Aware that this life style's not great but can't sleep without it. Have a night off it and feel so crappy the next day. All I can do is keep it in moderation so as to remain functional and live with it. However, have almost kicked the fags into touch; just have the odd rolly a day, sometimes every other day.

I quit cigs 1 month ago. I have not quit/slowed down drinking though and have no intention of doing so for the foreseeable future, I like my beer to much.

Not going sleep easily unless you pass out is a normal fact for a drinker, and if you drink enough, long enough you will die if your booze is taken away abruptly.
Don't mean shit if it is beer, Wine, Or whiskey, it is all alcohol and just a richer mix asyou go up the chain.
And anyone should have the mental capacity to amuse themselves without just setting in one place and drinking.
I often said and even thought that as I drank everyday,, "Just what would I do with my free time if I didn't drink", and I was serious, then I quit and there was not enough hours in a day once I got sober because my mind was working and I found there so much to and even found out that people wanted me to work for them now that they could depend on me and so I started to work more and life got better because I had money for things other than booze and partys.
Give it a shot and if you are so stupid that you can't find anything else to do, then it would be better for the gene pool if you did check out.

    Wise words.

I also notice that when the buzz of the booze is not in me, that I think about some of the things that need to be thought about. Some of the things that I should think about, but that do not, when the booze buzz takes over.

I think this is being more cognizant to reality.

I'm not a drinker, but I have heard this and it is plausible for many reasons. Back in the day alcohol was mostly consumed as it was the only safe drink since their was little to no refrigeration or safe, clean drinking water available and alcohol would break down bacteria and viruses while keeping without refrigeration.

Reasonable thinking would suggest that a glass on occasion would have some health benefits in this regard as it also has the same effect in the bloodstream but the problem is the addictive properties and those who are most susceptible to those and can't regulate them effectively through moderation..For those who can regulate their drink, drink responsibly and enjoy the taste, more power to em..Personally I don't get any pleasure out of the taste nor the sensation of being impaired nor do I need it to have fun and be sociable. My not drinking may make others around me uncomfortable but that's more about them feeling their own weaknesses and inability to avoid it and projecting on to me and wanting me to bend to their whims and follow the crowd than it is about my not drinking..

I'm only uncomfortable when they are judgmental against me or their drunken behavior reflects poorly on me through association. Whether it's driving impaired and irresponsibly or egotistically believing they aren't, or are capable of driving while impaired or better than someone else who isn't, especially more so than anyone who is not impaired just because they may have been LUCKY enough not to have injured themselves (as never happens with drunks anyway) or worse yet someone else or some other deviant behavior they wouldn't be doing if they weren't impaired, then I find it personally offensive without apologies...Most especially when they argue with someone who is not impaired about their decisions and actions while they are impaired..That's the height of arrogant and imbecilic behavior IMO and just proves how incapable of making a sensible decision they are at the time..

The other really scary thing is while they think they have never hurt anyone while driving drunk it is a very real possibility that they might have and never even known it if they kept on going for example thinking they just hit a bump in the road for example and if they did is it likely they would ever admit it? That is the fallacy about drinking and driving as well as other behaviors while being drunk, the convenience is using that as an excuse and also for the denial.

I once went on the town with 2 new acquaintances and they had both had a few earlier on while I hadn't had any, but not knowing the area I was forced to either go with them or appear anti social by following them in my car, I should have been offered to drive in reality..

while getting lost and them turning around we pulled out in front of an oncoming car late at night that was doing about 100kph or more around a bend and was coming towards my side of the car and I got hell for speaking out a warning about this oncoming car since this U-turn was being taken at a very casual pace with no concerns.

Numerous comments were made about my speaking up when in actuality the driver of our car froze up right in the oncoming cars path, like a deer in the headlights, because he was impaired and not thinking clearly so he had to take the time to process the danger but still didn't recognize it even after my speaking out and since he was thinking in slow motion and not in real time like I was, so it was all trivial to them and complete denial about the potential incident and perceived danger that the OTHER driver had just avoided in spite of his driving faster than he should have been for the road..

What was also not taken under consideration in this scenario was the fact that regardless of how fantastic this driver may have been in his own clouded mind , at that time of night, on that day, in that area, there was also the very real possibility that this other driver was also impaired like him and not as prolific a driver as he was while drunk .. Certainly I was judged for my speaking up and that is when I get extremely offended when others put my families future and my life in danger without even so much as an apology thinking about the larger picture and then treat my protestations with a dismissive and trivial attitude.. Demonstrates a complete lack of character as far as I'm concerned especially when it's used to pass negative judgment on the responsible and sensible person of the group..

All of the reasons I've heard here for quitting along with the denials are the same reasons for people drinking, selfish and self centrist without any mention of anyone else's benefits in their life such as family or friends for example...

I've been off the booze for the last 4 months for medical reasons. Looking forward to the occasional beer once I get the all clear.

I had no idea there were so many sober people on TD as a lot of posts seem to be caused by intoxication.

I've been off it for a month and a half and feel great. Between owning a bar and going out with the hashers a few times a week it was almost impossible to go a day or night without at least one drink. About 3-4 times a week it was 6+ drinks and to have a big beer gut at 28 is not something to be too proud of. Now I may have a drink or two a week but that's about it. Haven't been drunk in quite some time.

i get myself totally wrecked at least five times a week and nobody would ever say so by the balanced and rational way i post.
blackgang: i would happilly go wog-hunting with you, but we wog hunters normally start off with an half bottle of brandy each, then go to the pub to get pissed after the hunt.
nothing wrong with being teetotal, but you may take a bit of a hiding each time it is your turn to pay for a round.

Cool, so you never drink tea.

What about alcohol? How you you get on with that?
Funny thing is tea is all i used to drink back in the UK, but rarely drink it here. I used to suffer from terrible indigestion to the point i was on prescribed medication. Had the gasctroctomy as it was so severe. Beer, coffee, chocolate and bread was definately a no no. That was 3 years ago and i haven't had the problems, or any medication since living in Thailand. Even my achey bones have cleared as authristis ran in the family.

I can drink coffee and all things I couldn't back in the UK.

Nope, nothing wrong with the occasional drink, but it is not the occasional drink that is being discussed here but the everyday or the 2 day binge every week that hurts folks.
My dad had the occasional drink for years after he came home from WW ll, it was a fifth [4/5 of a quart sold in USA] a day while at work on the pond at the sawmill and then the getting drunk every nite.
He lasted damn near 8 years before he was put in the Vets hospital with sever Jaundice [Hep] and after 3 months they turned him loose and told him that another drink would kill him, so like a good fellow he never took another drink and died in 1989 after setting in a wheel chair for 10 years from a stroke caused by years of high blood pressure from his being a drunk..

well, we are actually discussing if anyone is teetotal

I like a drink now and then, sharing a bottle of wine, having a couple of beers etc

I haven't been really drunk since years ago, I don't like it

As for the stupidity that was mentioned, alcoholics are just people whose metabolism and mental state cannot handle drink, so it is best to stop

Like anything, drink only harms you if over-indulged, set your limits
    I have reported your post

Good on ya for that, takes some doing to do it, but fairly easy if you have had enough, I had that one 27 years ago, and am better for it.
