Why The F**** Is It Called The World Series?

I wanted to know, so I looked it up.

The Spalding guide of america in 1887 named it "Worlds championship Series" (later shortened to world series) in the hope that other nations such as "Australia and Great Britain" would soon play and "become rivals"...none have.

As it was american league and national league meeting, then a bigger name was used..world....as regards america hoping Australia then Great Britain would play it, source states... "This didn't happen, but the name "World's Championship Series" stuck..

But lets elaborate on the point why.

People ask with Spalding guide naming it World championship Series attempting to entice other countries to play it of which it states Australia and Great Britain, and why they dont play it, a major reason for this is the British invented Baseball aka Rounders for children and its historically been for them, whom it was intended so while you dont see adults from UK playing it, its VERY popular among kids up to 5th grade..notably girls who have formalised competitions nationwide.

I don't mind Baseball but as the Americans acknowledge it is more of a pastime.

Ice Hockey is a decent sport also.

Gridiron and basketball are pure arse.

Well at one time bfore all these retractable roofs, gourmet gedunk and what not The stadiums actually did resemble a bowl.

While an interesting subject, it is brought up usually 'round late September or so back home. One is left to wonder why so many brits are obessed with things "American"
    "The English invented..."

Some fuckin cave man kicked a ball, made a contest out it. Two goals. Two teams. Mayhem ensued. Late one dude picked up tha ball and ran with it. Now while these hardy fellas were between Wooly Mamoth Hunting they got kind of particular about their game. Think they killed that first guy... But eventually two schools thought grew out of this.

Then over at the next valley some heavy browed knucklehead picked up a rock and hit it with a stick. Now all sorts of shit came out of that. you had places wher allthe guys had sticks(they hit each other with their sticks sometimes and it was fun) and other games where only one guy had a stick and nobody got hit very much it was "interesting." Then after a while, you had the old, toothless fuckers they'd come out and watch and get drunk, sometimes they'd hit each otehr with sticks too.

    English Smenglish.

I remember being taught to play soccer back in seventh grade, kinda pissed us guys off, seemed like a girls game, didn;t go over that well. Mater fo fact think there was a USA girls team won some kinda world champeenship back a few years? Not sure, like I said, a girls game. Any way the next year we was back to playing football.

Now, American footBall isn't really what you'd call a "contact sport" it's more of an 'Impact sport' Where you not only get to hit mother-fucker, you get to get a runnin start at it and hit 'em real fucking hard. But they don't allow sticks.

next time You're over in the states go ahead join in a nice little street game of "B-ball." You are right about one thing; you really oughta play with the girls. Basketball is what you would call "contact sport" Much like boxing is a contact sport, but with a lot of running. Elbows and knees, body blocks and getting knocked to the pavement on yer ass. Good B-ball player will be in Boxer like shape and as good at takgn a punch too. But that "netball" thing, sounds a perfect girls pastime.

But how many of y'all are players? never really had much interest in spectating, after I grew out of playing the games I lost interest in watching 'em too.

never really got into that "my sport is better than your sport" shit. Hell, I never knew there was another country until the beatles came along. Why would I care what fuckin games they played? You guys, too much time on yer hands. You got sports in England? Play 'em. We sure don;t give a fuck. You wanna come over and play some of ours? welcome.

You wanna watch on the "telly?" Each his own I guess.

Yep, us girls played soccer -- the boys wouldn't even think about it. Sissy sports they called it. I didn't like it much either except when you could line up a kick to hit a**hole Donna in the head. Hockey is high-powered and lots of fistis, which I love. Canada has football but it's too bladdy slow -- I only watch NFL.

It's called superbowl coz its the final fekin game of the season. It used to be between the winners of the NFL and the now-defunct AFL.

America started baseball, so if they want to call the finals the World Series, so fekin what.

If it was started with the intention of encouraging other nations to join, why don't they invite some other nations to join now?

Boys played hockey at your school? Only girls did it at ours. Summer was netball, winter was hockey. Aaaah, there's a special feeling you get from being slammed in the legs with a hockey stick or ball on your bare legs (games skirts & knee socks) in the middle of winter... Never forgotten.

"Series" is a series of games. Best out of 7 wins.

"World" is the name of the sponsoring newspaper at that time.

This has been discussed at least a couple of times before here, on the board.
