You're not one of these greedy business types I like to have a pop at every now and again, your a self made man who works his arse off to give his family a good life and you're under pressure to sustain it. To provide fish for your family - age shouldn't be an issue, because when you're too old to dip your rod, your son will have been dipping his for some time already.
what about if he becomes ill and his son is still a kiddie. how will he survive if he has no savings?
The same as the world majority do.

Things do not make me "happy." Financial security is nice, but it's a different story, because in the OP, it's not about security.

    I like it Scamp.

I often take a couple of months off work in between jobs if I can afford it.

Most people think I'm a lazy [at][at][at][at] though.

I think I don't waste my money on half the shit they do and so I can have a holiday.

    Each to their own.

If you only work enough/fish enough for a day-by-day existence, you work until you die.

That appeals to some. But not all.

Others prefer to work their balls off and retire comfortably. That appeals to some, too.

Is one method preferable over the other?

It depends what age you live to and how much you enjoy your job.

Yeah, I used to do this also, and hopefully I can do it again someday in the future.

I'd work, and save. I'd put money away for old age, and I'd save to travel and see and learn about the world.

I lived in a small studio and drove a nice car that was paid for, reliable, but not brand new or flashy.

When I would do this, many in the US thought I was lounging at a pool sipping on margaritas staying in 5-star hotels.

Some understood what I was doing. Many didn't.

That's OK. Too each their own.

Let's face it, we all work until we die, in one way or another.
There are few who can guarantee that they have saved enough, or have an index linked pension to survive in retirment.
I think a poor fisherman who has little to lose, is better off than a retired banker, who hopes he will get a return on his savings to support his rich lifestyle.
Who has the most to lose, and who has to make the biggest change to his lifestyle?

    But,
"I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs...I have a full life."
That reminds me, does anyone have a spare guitar?

But, the point is 'what do they do when they retire?'.

The same as what Pedro has been doing (and enjoying) all his life.

They do whatever they like -- and if the fish aren't biting, they don't go hungry.

But the fish will only stop biting if the Americans get involved!

    Didn't you read the OP?
