Understand what you are saying, but it is NOT Entirely true about giving, they appear to "give" in the hope to "SUCK" a benefit from wherever they give, take for example, a really revered orange clad, barefoot tatooed Nak Leng appears at the temple, the fact that they donate a plastic bucket filled with the usual Darlie/Tuna/Attack or OMO, then entitles them to SUCK the goodness from him, it's a bit like trying to buy your god!
Don't get me wrong, if I was in a lot of these peoples positions, I too would try and better myself any way I could.
The point I am trying to make is that they are conditioned from an early age to believe this crap!
When, instead of supporting the saffron mafia, they would be better off donating to schools/clinics/hospitals, where the money is really needed.
There are a "small" number of temples here that actually help people, but the majority, do absolutely nothing apart from suck the money from those than can least afford it to support themselves.
My local temple is the worst I have seen. Normally, (from what I have seen in the other villages) The monks come around at about 5-6 am, with their bowls, barefoot, accepting food etc, and blessing those people that give, I have no problem with that, up to them, if it makes you feel better, great.
Where we are, you cannot find a fucking monk in the temple after 10am, they are out wherever, they don't get up in the morning and go "blessing" anyone, they have a wheelbarrow type device, that they send out with some fat guy, who is not a monk, and only helps out at the temple, he wanders round getting free food for the monks who are still in bed, and brings it back to the temple, NEVER have I seen this in Thailand before.
No one get's "blessed" it is like MEALS ON WHEELS IN REVERSE!
But shit, if they need or want another bit of temple building, they don't ask for "donations"...they DEMAND 500 Baht! The other temples here take 10baht, 20 baht etc...not here...WE WANT 500 BAHT FROM EVERY HOUSE! It stinks!

My neighbor actually probably does better than me financially (not hard to do these days) but my boys ride all of their own toys with a helmet and always have, recently I began letting them ride their bikes up and down the street. Didn't do it before because we only had one bike, I reconditioned the smaller one for my youngest and that in itself was an experience for the neighbor to see as I did it outside and he was watching.

I bought a new one for my oldest birthday and also removed the training wheels and put them on my youngest bike as his had broken, then taught my oldest to ride his bike without training wheels in about an hour.. At first my youngest was complaining about not wanting to have the older (handmedown) bike but got over that soon enough as this was now HIS bike. Anyway my point is that they ride with helmets on always and the neighbors little un decide on his own, over his daddy, that was cool and wanted to use daddy's scooter helmet so that is what he used for a few days, but like his shoes, and his bike, it was way too big..

Then some days later I was moving some boxes and realized I still had one of the first helmets my boys used though it needed a new snap buckle I gave it to the little un across the street and now he and his father comes out every time my boys are riding and all smiles with his helmet and Wai's me every time he does, plus his father, who I hardly ever see actually doing things with his boy comes out and stands and supervises and spends time with his boy every time we are out there too..

Bottom line is they do pay attention, they just don't want to be perceived as being ignorant as no one does, so if you approach it with tact and patience and through example they will follow, if you take that "you're a dumb fuckwit and don't deserve my time but you're lucky to have it" approach they'll ignore you and you will always be on the outside looking in pulling your hair out.

Mind you I have to work at reminding myself of this several times a day so it doesn't come easily..

As I pointed out earlier, there is a difference between being an open wallet/doormat and being a helpful inlaw. If you have the balance right, I encourage you to continue educating them for the better. Not just because 'your way' is the 'only way'. It helps if the education passes both ways.

I am English - correct, I was born in a working class, council estate in Manchester England to a one parent working mother. I am well educated - at my own cost. Worked full time in a factory and studied tertiary education in the evenings after working a full manual shift in aforementioned factory. I went to a typical English 'working class' comprehensive school. I am strictly hetrosexual. I am unmarried - correct again, I am not a TEFLR, I working as a Senior Business Development Manager (sorry for using my full wanky title - but I felt it was neccessary to illustrate your pathetic assumption) for a large Multinational company here in Bangkok.

I arrived here in Bangkok with 1,500 GBP in my pocket with a view to not wanting to go back to England. I never did, and was lucky/smart enough to get myself a 'proper' job here in Bangkok.

I have been rewarded in life through hard work, 'street smarts', commercial accumen and character.

I am not saying Thailand is the heaven or haven it once was. But I am still happy with my little lot and despite the niggles and differences of cultures, have managed to live a happy and fulfilling life here in Thailand for 8 years now.

P.S. I have been and stayed at many provinces in Thailand and my current girlfriend of almost 6 years is from Loey province. She works a full time job as a Retail Manager for a very popular and well known fashion brand in Thailand.

I am no pushover, nor doormat. But I do find your excessiveness to go out of your way to not help your inlaws somewhat hardcore.
