Aussie beer voted best at JD Wetherspoon

Aussie beer voted best at JD Wetherspoon - General News - Morning Advertiser

An Australian beer, not previously served in the UK, has been voted as the most popular at JD Wetherspoon’s international beer festival.

JDW customers voted for their favourite beer

Barons Black Wattle Original Ale was brewed at Banks’s brewery in Wolverhampton especially for the festival.

More than 8,500 Wetherspoon customers voted for their favourite festival ale on the company’s website, with Barons Black Wattle Original Ale coming out top.

“We brewed four overseas beers in the UK for the festival and it was a fantastic opportunity for our customers to sample beers not previously available in the UK," said Wetherspoon festival organiser Jonathan Yates.

“The fact that Barons Black Wattle Original Ale was first choice with our website voters shows that our customers are always keen to try new beers and that they enjoy them too.

“The other three overseas beers were all listed in the top six of the website vote.”

Barons managing director Scott Garnett added: “We set out to create a uniquely Australian beer by using native Australian ingredients as the dominant flavour.”

The beer is described as Amber Ale flavoured with native Australian roasted wattle seed, which brings a unique flavour to the beer reminiscent of hazelnut and mocha and has an abv of 4.8%.

A uniquely Australian beer made in Wolverhampton. Thats kinda like The Outback Steakhouse chain- which proudly uses USDA beef and is American owned.

I don't know of any Aussie beers which use roasted Blackwattle seed.

WTF is a black bloody wattle?

Never found any when I lived in Wolverhampton !
    Must be imported from Oz.
Can you imagine the scene if the customs officer authorising the import was a "Real Ale" fanatic ??

Customs -"Wos this then ? "
Importer - " Black Wattle seeds"
    Customs - " Wot they for ?"
Importer - " To add to beer"
    Customs- (screaming) " WHAT ???"
Importer - " Yes - they give the beer a hint of hazlenut flavour with a touch of mocha"
Customs -( with steam coming out of his ears ) " Listen sonny -I want beer to taste like bloody beer - if I want a taste of hazlenuts I would eat a bloody hazlenut - If I wanted a taste of mocha - that's some sort of poncey coffe isn't it - I would have a cup of coffee!"
Customs ( over his shoulder ) 'Hey George ! get a few big lads from the warehouse over here and
have them kick this bloody joker out - after that get them to dump this load of shit in the bin !!! '

It sounds like it'd be worth trying, despite being a lager derivative.

One of my favourite beers was a hand-pulled, cask conditioned lager. It's just a shame that 99% of beer in the world is gassy, tasteless piss, when it doesn't need to be.

If it was brewed in the u.k then I would say technically that it can't be classed as a win for the ozzies. It probably just tastes better being brewed in the u.k using our water and brewing equipment. Coupled with the fact that Witherspoons is probably the worst chain of pubs in England its not really that much of an achievment.
