well like I said if anyone knows of a few people that want to leave Bangkok and come to Phuket and fly out to Sing. or Malaysia but have no way to do that without big money car rental without returning the car or long, uncomfortable and inconvenient bus ride let me know shortly as i write this there is also a luggage consideration though too, it can't be someone who is returning with the bedroom dresser..
I'm checking into a couple of vans possibly too..

Now there is an idea! Still have to get down to Phetchabun though but at least the mrs could drive up to the border to meet me (400 k + though)

Ideally I would like to get to Phitsanolouk but if I can get into Bkk I can just bus it from Mor Chit as usual.

Luckily I am in Dubai as I write this in the brand new terminal and thinking I had a 10 hour wait for my flight to Sing in the departure lounge it turns out they have a nice pay by the hour hotel right in the terminal. USD 160 for 8 hours though....receipt will go to the boss though so no worries.

A friend of mine was due to fly into Bkk this Sunday. His airline has offered him a ticket to Singapore, so hes taken that, and will get a train to Phuket.

It's a long, long bus ride, but you can go from Singapore, through KL to Hat Yai, then catch a bus to anywhere in the Kingdom. Buses are nice, comfortable and with their own entertainment systems. This would take you about 18 hours.

I was flying in on Tuesday, but my travel agent got me into KL, where I'll catch an Air Asia flight to Phuket then bus myself home from there. Or maybe I'll catch a flight to Penang and mini van it home from there.

^^ I guess that is the go. Are they proper coaches with good legroom etc? Not looking forward to that but safer than mini bus.

So 18hrs to hat yai then, ? to bangkok and 6 more to Phetchabun...

I have a flight booked from BKK to LHR on the 5th of December. I'm trusting that the situation will be resolved by then. It will certainly mark a new high in ineptitude if it's not.

While you can forget your easy flights to Dubai, you will need to have some incentive... to... take a good train or vip bus to malaysia/border (bus to border, train to butterworth in ml) and so on fly from kuala lumpur, or if you are american and fear muslim go on to singapore

To look on the positive side, there is a bit of an unexpected adventure ahead. Not the end of the world.

I don't need unexpected adventure when I am just trying to get home to my family! Long overnight bus trips, change overs, 4 currencies (along with assorted shrapnel weighing me down), full coming home from work baggage.

    Like bloody backpacking again.

I can fly to KL from Sing for $150, then bus it the rest of the way in a 36 seat VIP coach without having to sit around for hours on end waiting. The Thai side seems the worst.

I wonder how busy it will be, maybe a whole bunch of us trying the same thing and no seats. (now that would really make my day) I am very close to buying a bottle of something for the bus trip. Maybe it will be one big party and we can give immigration some stick at hat yai!

There used to be a VIP bus from Sing - Bangkok via KL
Could be another option if it still runs - about 30 hours ( but they change drivers a few times )

Not been on it myself but my son did and said it was ok !

A huge backlog of people is building up. I doubt that anyone with a ticket to fly anywhere out of BKK in December will be travelling when they expect to be travelling.

All the best Ant. I certainly hope you don't miss the holidays with your family.

Let's hope the estimated 3 weeks until opening the airport is not accurate.

especially true if Thai's aircraft have to go through a "5 day on the ground" check. 5 days on the ground requires pretty much a complete inspection, not just a walk around and instrument check.

Well I did'nt make my flight, it got cancelled. They have offered me Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Manillia as alternatives on the 6th or Bangkok on the 7th. I'm taking the chance on KL as if the BKK is not open I'll still be stuck here, Just booked a connection to Phuket for 2500 Bhat, My misses will meet me there, a few days holiday and then the long drive home.......got some serious waits at airports though
I have more than the average number of arm and legs

I reakon the opposite. I don't think anything will happen before Dec 5th. I don't think they will risk any violence or bloodshed before then. I think that thats one of the reesons bugger all is happening now.
