How to help unhappy acquaintances back home?

There's a man back home about 33 years old who's a friend of a friend. He's one of these people who's wasted his intelligence, got the wrong girl up the duff when he was a lot younger and really needs a fresh start. He's shown a little interest in Thailand but having never been to Asia he doesn't know what he's missing.

I am not suggesting for one minute he come out here and teach English - I am a realist and I think Thailand would be fine for a holiday but just to get him some kind of laboring or landscape gardening job overseas would be good, even Australia or something.

I am aware that there are laboring jobs available for westerners but where which countries offer the best opportunities and where's the best place to look?

I found this on Google How to Find Work Overseas but if anybody has any more specific information I'd be interested to hear it. He's only this year discovered the internet but if I can point him in the right direction then I've done my bit - not that I owe him anything.
"I'm an outsider by choice, but not truly. It's the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out. I'd rather be in, in a good system. That's where my discontent comes from: being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin' straight ahead. Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

visa loophole probably doesn't apply to garden landscapers.

Scampy, you have enough problems of your own, work on them before you start destroying your friend of a friend.

Best to stay in the UK, educate his kid for free, get supported by the Welfare State safety net. Watch the Jeremy Kyle show, be a couch potato. Lots of people don't amount to much. Under-achievement and failure to meet potential is the fate of nearly all of us.

Being a labourer anywhere is a poor alternative. In the UK, blue collar guys can afford nice holidays and have second homes in Spain.

Expatriation is never the safe bet for the unskilled and lazy. I'm not saying that characterises you Scampy, because you do have skills, but then again you do boast about how you have 'survived' for six years in Thailand - but, ...unemployed, and as an accomplishment thats marginal.

    Best your friend stays put.

    Redneck's probably right.

Life is better than ever for old Scampy, I guess I should focus on keeping it that way.

Maybe this is a trend thats starting as a result of the looming recession in the uk, but i have had two or three mates e-mail me asking for the lie of the land here. 2 mortgage brokers, previously monied and now zero income. One IT engineer, job outsourced to India and mortgage in arrears. All say they've had enough!

I'd give him a job on my boat but I already have two Thai staff, one driver and one at the marina. Don't need anyone else, can't really afford anyone else.

People cannot live on jobs you make up in your fantasy anyway. But then this friend may be imaginary as well so he could very well take a job on your imaginary boat.
