Actually, I quite like the 600,000 are prostitutes stats. That means, according to G2BH's and my theory only 600,000 Thai males are layabout violent pimps. Tiny minority. BTW, I went around with G2BH and asked (well, he asked as my Thai is pretty crap) & counted...

    Green'ed Timber - nice contribution.

I am not in a relationship with a Thai, but I can imagine if I would slag off or complain about my wife's ethnic group too much (I do allow myself rants about their driving, not the Kiwi side, the other part of her) she would be quite rightly upset.

Also, I am not sure I would stay in a country that bothers me so . . . hence our leaving Thailand.

My two cents worth about Thais in general is also rather more negative than positive, which is a shame as we did meet some lovely people (some of whose relatives shafted us, much to their chagrin and embarrassment)
I would also share this feeling with others, though in a slightly more diplomatic manner.

Very simple. I gave them the opportunity to pimp me out. 599,999 bent double laughing. The other one had a heart attack...

i think slagging off your own is your right, but when someone else does it then its not so funny.
I will slag off Singaporeans with other guys with Singaporean partners but would take offence if someone else did it.
I might even take offence at some foreigner slagging off the British royal family even though I don't think much of them myself.
anyway I wouldn't take the piss out of Thais on this forum. whats the point when the posters themselves provide so many great [iss taking opportunities?

Really you are not a great complainer though bkka, or at least certainly not a vicious one. Some people on here will go on about Thai men being lazy queer cnuts and Thai women all being slagdogs but you can bet your bottom dollar they don't speak this way to the Thais.

I bet you don't mention the mia noi to the gf.

I've encountered the same attitude in island cultures (not Thai) too. Its just different here. People aren't filled with the "dream" idea that pushes success in more developed nations (ie America.) I think that it can be likened to a caste type system where people kind of accept a role in society assigned at birth. I'm not saying that there is a caste system in Thailand. But it's very difficult for a person not born into money here to succeed. If I hadn't been offered the opportunities I have and had been born into the situation the people we slag on here are, I couldn't be arsed to make much of an effort either. It seems that success is an insurmountable goal if you're not in the know or carry a good name. I feel bad for the people that piss me off on a daily basis but there are people here with iniative that make it. I think that if Thai society weren't so class based this nation would be on alot better track.
A well balanced assessment. I agree.

When I give the wife a hard time about Thailand and the way things are done she simply replies
Why do you stay here then ?
Why do you have Thai wife then ?
Then I normally mutter something about tight pussy and cheap beer

I find the constant slagging of Thais on here to be a bit tedious. It's all so very repetative, cyclical almost, and always seems to involve the same core group of posters. That is to say if you see a thread in that vein you know who is going to be posting in it even before you look.

And it's always the same generalisations and stereotypes being perpetuated, the same unproven airs of superiority being touted. The most telling thing is that it is rarely, if ever, even constructive criticism. Just whinging for whingings sake.

It's hard at times to live in another country and culture and there are definately some negatives but the positives far outweigh those and if they don't then you should reconsider being here. Some people are clearly not suited to living away from home and the only succour they seem to find is in belittling their hosts and spreading their frustrations and misery as far and wide as is possible.

Yeah, but they would complain regardless where they stayed, some people are born that way, kind of a genetic fuck-up...

Hey Ant, its all about learning to understand the pitfalls and negative aspects of living in a foreign country. The good aspects are not a problem. And while I do agree that one should not only focus on the negative aspects of Thailand, I think its very appropriate on a Farang forum that we should help to educate each other by sharing experiences and opinions. Once the rose coloured glasses are off, there is a lot to learn, as I am sure you could appreciate.

Nope never lived or even been to Orstraylia. Theres slagging people off and then theres forming an opinion on what you've seen. I would class lazy as not just someone not willing to do something but someone who takes shortcuts, doing a shoddy job or constantly being late or even not turning up at all. This applies to anyone in my eyes not just Thais.
Theres plenty of great things about Thailand and plenty of bad things. You cant have the good without the bad.

Good points all, Panda. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't complain; I know I do often enough. And a forum like this is by its very nature the perfect place to air those complaints and frustrations (as you yourself have touched on).

I'm just saying that in my opinion some of it crosses a line from simply venting to something more akin to obsession, a self-perpetuating circle of misery and frustration feed by gross generalisations and bigotry. For some it doesn't seem to simply be a part of being here and living in another country with a sometimes strange and unfathmoable culture, it's almost as if it's the sole aspect, their raison d'etre, and they aren't happy unless they're miserable and have something to moan about.
