Languge Barriers, A Blessing In Disguise?

I know the phrase "language barrier" is usually associated with communication problems and possibly a dysfunctional relationship. But I think when thinking about it in more detail it may be a true blessing..

Sometimes I am just too lazy to argue in Thai or broken English and just let it be..

Sometimes I may say something when speaking to a friend a about last weekend and she doesnt take notice...

Maybe the lady is not 100% confidant in giving me shit as she does not know if it is being given correctly..

Anyway... Can the language barrier be a good thing.. I Definitely it can be, depending on language skills and the type of relationship you are in.. The more serious the relationship the ,more a pain in the ass the language barrier becomes i guess...

    Any thoughts?

Language barrier is a good thing. Too much English led to my last divorce. Now, I have a GF who speaks not one word of English and I couldn't be happier. We get along great on a normal level, but ain't no way we're going to have a complex psycho-drama and I like that very much.

Could it not be that perhaps she just does not find you or your conversations interesting, perhaps she just think's that she should endure your ramblings out of politeness but see's no reason to encourage them further?

    Just a thought.

I'm assuming you mean that in a confrontational context, in which case I have to say I agree 100%
It better that I cannot get my feelings across to some of the folks I meet along the way. I dump those feelings on here, as a vent.

I think so, as long as basic communication is working.

That would be my ideal situation. Forced into learning the language.

That's true for a fair few. If the Thais really understood what they were saying...

    That is exactly my point..

In the Hebrew scriptures, a high tower built in Shinar (Babylonia). According to Genesis 11:1 – 9, the Babylonians wanted to build a tower "with its top in the heavens." Angry at their presumption, God disrupted the enterprise by confusing the languages of the workers so that they could no longer understand each other. The tower was left unfinished and the people dispersed over the face of the earth. This twatty myth may have been inspired by a tower temple located north of the Marduk temple and known as Bab-ilu ("Gate of God").

Anyway I personally would prefer it if everyone in the world spoke one language - Thai, English, whatever.

They tried it once before - "Esparanto" didn't catch on though

    Back to the thread now!

I have had 3 serious partners
    English
    Belgian
    Taiwanese

Each case there has been a common fluent language

    English - English ( obviously)
Belgian - Dutch ( my second language)
Taiwanese- English ( her second language)

Have had quite a few in between but they all ended in failure due 100% to the lack of a common language that I could discuss domestic problems, daily news, everyday things- without one of us throwing a wobbly !

    F.Y.I.

    English = divorce
Belgian = contract in S America and I had to go
    Taiwanese still going !
Just another slant on the question

I think the langauge barrier can be a good thing. I have found that it leads to better communication becasue we make sure each other are clear on what is being said. We both have to pay attention to other one so we understand what is trying to be communicated. If you get lazy and do not listen well, then you can be in for a surpirse.
