    5555 nice one

Nearly every thai who I've been with when we've seen elderly beggars have come out with this line. Thing is, I talk to elderly beggars when i give them food and drinks (never money) and they are all fluent accented thais. Strange, that.

I never stop to ask. I did give one a corn cob once and she gave me a disapproving look then put it on the ground behind her. She clearly wasn't at all hungry.

It's funny how Amercans can't understand English sometimes.

    OK just for you.

This old hobo who slept in bus shelters and pushed a shopping cart about which contained all of his life's valuables used to pick up used cigarettes from the roadside to make up his own smokes. Then one day a car ran him over. Dude.

Oh dear, you are one of those types, farangs who spend their time here in awe looking up at thai society like some geeky kid trying to hack into the FBI or Area 51 database or like david attenborough looking down on an ant's nest, trying to learn as much as possible but feeling that you "only get to know about 25% of what really goes on" as if thais are some other species of endless amazement.

Did I put Dude in the right place? I'm never sure but I feel it is a tad like "khrap".

    ^
No, Smeg. I am well aware that around half of the population here have never worked, their families have never worked, and they have no idea how the people with houses and cars ever got them. They think it is by luck, and so they lie, steal, cheat beg and use prostitution to get money. These are mostly the characters who keep voting Thaksin back, with his get-rich schemes and free healthcare which the rest of the population are paying for.

Naturally they are attracted to Farangs because we have money and the decent Thais give Farangs a wide berth because they don't want all of the deceit, crime, prostitution and begging brought into their lives.

The sad thing it that they are the ones you seem to keep meeting. No wonder you are so downright unhappy. You poor miserable sod. You need to get away from Sukhumvit.

There's elderly beggars all over the place. Outside my Moo Baan on the overpass crossing Ram Inthra there's an old guy in his 60's who sits with a plastic cup. I always give him 20THB when I pass which is infrequently.
No tourists here to speak of.
    Plenty beggars though.
At the market 100 yards along the road there are many. Not to mention the destitutes that I see frequently sleeping in shopfronts, raking bins and being attacked by packs of stray dogs along the way.

Lets be real. Most of these begggars have 2 arms and two legs. Not all, but most.

My wife won't give an able bodied beggar 25 satang. She says it is about laziness, nothing more and nothing less.

Speak for yourself. I've never heard of decent thais giving farangs a wide berth. I work for a top multinational company and spend most of my socialtime with my colleagues. And you?
What multinational TEFLer out source company is it that you work for?

I was passing through Asoke/Sukhumvit BTS/MRT recently when I noticed a Farang sitting beside the entrance begging for work. Large cardboard sign with something like "Work Needed" at the top and then about 100 words underneath which nobody is ever going to read.

^ I think I have seen that same person. I stopped to read his sign twice.
It goes on the theme that his Thai wife (ex-BG no doubt) has cleaned him out and taken the kids, house, money etc.. and all he needs now is a job or money (6K Baht) to get home. He says he is a Vietnam vet and also used to work in the merchant navy but the downturn in the economy has finished all the jobs off.

He even has photos of his Thai wife and kids on the sign.

Sad old fuck if you ask me but I did give him 20Baht.

Lord, not another one. He is too young to have been in Vietnam. Well the one I saw was. Maybe his parents went to Vietnam, or maybe he neutered dogs in Vietnam after the war.
