By the way, wtf is an African-American? Ninety-eight percent of Americans have descendants from abroad; should we all be hyphenates? If a black man was born in and came from the dark continent, OK, I'll call him African-American.

    If he didn't, he's delusional.
Well how else are we supposed to refer to niggers then!?

Somewhere in what passes for keda's thought processes I bet he genuinely thinks that's actually pretty funny and witty.

On the issue of the N-word,

This bounty hunter who is a television star (well, performer) was taped using the N-word in private. One TV station cancelled his show.

My attitude is, if he wants to use the n-word in private that is his business, and no one elses.

Because he was taped secretly (by his son), who released it to the media, he's losing a show.

Well, he wasn't prosecuted was he?

Yes, he can refer to his son's girlfriend as a nigger if he wants to, but other people, like his employers are entitled to protect their investment in the show.

Given that some of those viewers are the same people he is referring to, and that they may not want to further the career of a man who speaks like that about them, his employers would be stupid to keep him on.

So, he was allowed to say it, just as people are allowed to dislike him for it.

    ^ and ^^ and ^^^

I don't use this word in private. Not at any time.

But one group can say it and others, cannot. Most of the time the meaning is different, but it's still used in the media by artists, etc.

Either let it be used, (condone it) or condemn all use of it.

(This however....is not how society works.)

That's because when one group uses it it doesn't have the same connotations as when the other does. Simple.

There's a certain amount of delicious irony in claiming that it's in any way 'unfair'.

from all of the above, it can be read that many posters have racist feelings, either subliminal or out front

that is very common, a normal human trait, but if we want to progress as a civilised society we should try to educate ourselves out of those feelings.

I think we don't want to use the words like nigger, spik, yid, paki, any more

Hopefully, we will get our labels right but then we need to reassess how we see our differences and not be scared by them
    I have reported your post

I am doing my part to eliminate racism by fathering mixed-race children. Regardless of whether this tactic will eventually wipe out racism, it sure is fun trying!

One idea I have long held is for the Olympics to eliminate national origin in identifying athletes. Let the Games be about the athletes, not the countries. No more nationalistic jingoism.

Another idea is to bring back intermarraige between children of heads-of-state. To get the ball rolling, we here can offer one serious, smart girl, and another energetic spunky one.

    It's very simple, really.

Using potentially offensive jargon between friends and people who belong to one's group is ok. One can easily spot what is meant, as a long-term immigrant, like myself, one learns to tell the difference between a friendly nudge and intending to hurt.

The dishonesty of the hopelessly prejudiced is astonishing, isn't it, keda?

    .
Yes, good idea, all this nationality thing gets a bit tedious

In motor racing they have started the A1 races, cars by nationality rather than manufacturing teams. It is a boring idea, although the racing can be OK

At least F1 is more focussed on the teams and drivers, but they still insist on playing national anthems at the end for some archaic reason

mind you, that will not eliminate racism, which is based usually on physiological differences

A pussified society, and frankly, I am sick of it.
quite right Milkman, you tell it like it is

I think you should immediately go to your nearest black neighbourhood and call them all "niggers". That'll show 'em
My statement above is not about blacks or the N-word.

The comment about "calling a spade a spade," means that if some phenomena is considered true because of factual evidence and you discuss it, people will ban you, fire, you and attack you.

You have totally misunderstood my post.

"Calling a spade a spade," is a very common expression in the U.S. and is not about race.
Milkman, you are right calling a spade a spade is a common expression, more common 30 years ago. Blacks are also referred to as spades in some circles so there is overlap. I am not sure if the original saying has anything to do with blacks, it probably has something to do with a spade vs a shovel.

^I dont think Andy had any problem undestanding the expression 'calling a spade a spade', his response showed that. 'Tell it like it is'.

I would say that is a world wide English expression.

Can't call them boys either. Not even a group of black boys -- must refer to them as children.

    This is getting tough.
