I'm completely fcuking confused about non-binary pronouns

So here's this chap, er... woman, er ... non-binary (whatever the fcuk that means, 'cos non-binary means sod-all to me unless it involves digital electronics).

Anyway, Sam Smith (which I thought was a brewery), is now to be referred to as 'they' or 'them'.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-49688123

I'm sorry, but my basic English grammar knowledge informs me that 'they' or 'them' refers to two or more people.

    Is he schizophrenic or something?

Why can't we call a spade a spade nowadays? If this person doesn't know whether he - sorry they, are coming or going, then that's er .. their problem. Just don't fcuking confuse everyone else 'cos actually no-one else really gives a flying fcuk.

BTW, I recently got an email from the British embassy who signed as 'John (pronoun he or him)'

Only 'mercans" use the word spade to refer to anything other than a tool. Call a spade a spade but don't call it a ferkin shovel>

They can be singular; that's no problem, common, normal language usage.

    hmm... It, seems to work.

Doesn't really matter, if they desire they will find offense regardless of how you address the issue, even if you use the "correct" pronoun the'll say the tone you used insulted them, him, her, it, she, m. sexually bewildered...

the deck is stacked, a can't win situation

Binary means relating to two things. In this context the traditional classification into male or female. The person in the OP is saying he feels niether male nor female, hence non binary.

English has no gender neutral form, it is either he or she. I do kind of understand the issues, but frankly feel too old to give a shit about it. Colour me dinosaur.

Actually on reflection "it" would fit the bill nicely.

He doesn't identify as male or female. Although has short hair and a beard..

It's all bullshit. Wouldn't surprise me if he's got an album coming out.

In Mandarin Chinese 'he' 他 (tā), and 'she' 她 (tā), are pronounced the same.

In Spanish the possessive adjective su is the same for his, her, its, or their.

It's so discriminatory for those that identify as non-human. Trees for example.

    I like it.

In this new world where we can choose to identify as anything we like, I'm gonna choose to identify as Monica Bellucci's lover then give her what's coming, then I'm gonna choose to identify as a 21 year old virgin Catholic and go to confession - let's see what the priest makes of that, then I'm gonna identify as Dilly's ex-wife and put in a big claim, lastly, I'll choose to identify as an Australian, go to their embassy and demand a passport. Surely, the law wouldn't discriminate against me in any of these areas???

Well, if you claimed to 'identify' as an Aboriginal and got a few of your Mob to agree, you're in with a decent chance.

some legislation and court judgements, defines an Aboriginal as someone 'who is a member of the Aboriginal race of Australia, identifies as an Aboriginal and is accepted by the Aboriginal community as an Aboriginal'.

Brianna Martin and Michael James want you to know that beneath their white skin runs a rich and proud Indigenous heritage that they want to share with as many people as possible.

    Exactly.

Over thinking most everything to the point of unnecessary and needless complexities.

Do we see a cultural pattern, yet?

Is it such a big deal to call someone what they want to be called when it's precisely zero imposition or impact on your own life? Is it really any different from back in the day when that one teacher insisted you call them 'sir' when they were neither a Sir and were in fact a jumped-up cnut? Who really gives a fcuk. Or is there some other way this can be made into an assault on and affront to straight white men who are the victims of, well, everything (ask them, they'll tell you).

    They's music is shite anyways.

It's not that. It's that they get all fucking offended when you forget.

I call one bloke "he" and multiple blokes "they" and if he/they want to argue about it, he/they can contact the OED and go and fuck himself/themselves.

As a colour neutral, ecks why sentient life form, who has a reproductive preference for double ecks sentient life forms of similar species (or better known as CNEYSLFWHARPFDESLFOSS), I find your heterophobic anti caucasian comments offensive.
I have forwarded a letter of extreme hurt to the New Zealand department of equal rights and opportunity for CNEYSLFWHARPFDXSLFOSS.
In future please adress me as Colour neutral ecks why sentient life form.

Therefore not knowing in advance can cause offense? Personally I have no time for labels. If anyone finds offense with this, please feel free to add them to whichever collective noun you are most comfortable with.

Meanwhile, I will be assiduously not giving a toss.

Yup. Self-obsessed people taking themselves way too seriously, and falling all over themselves to be 'offended' on behalf of other people they don't even know. Please..

    Exactly.

This bloke Smith needs to ease off on the stimulants or he'll end up like 'the symbol' (Prince).
