Fan car lower bunk - one up the shitter

Best way to travel in my opinion... Start the journey with a gaze out of the (open) window peering out over Bangkok shanties and small railside fires, listen to the 'ding.. ding.. ding.. ding..' as you rock and squeak over the level crossings and order a nice lab moo with a cold fried egg.

When the friendly staff come to transform your bed, go to the buffet car which is nice and windy and loud and meet your mates for a few beers and watch the burgundy tablecloths flip and flap about like tablecloths on a train with the windows open. Josh and banter with the transport police and smoke cigarettes.

Go to bed and pull the curtain, rest an elbow on the open window sill and listen to Mike Oldfield on your i-pod, or Dr Dre, or the soundtrack to 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' and crack open another beer.

Later, go to sleep and sleep deep to the gentle rocking and squeaking and stopping and starting of the train, masturbate or read a book if you can't sleep or snuggle with your partner.

You lazy rich bastards with your Bangkok Airways and your business class don't know what you're missing.
"I'm an outsider by choice, but not truly. It's the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out. I'd rather be in, in a good system. That's where my discontent comes from: being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin' straight ahead. Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

Not nearly as much fun as long haul bus/coach travel.

I like the second class sleeper trains. Comfortable and cheap. It is a nice way to travel if you're not pushed for time. And yes, the lower bunk is significantly better than the upper one, and worth the extra charge.

the only problem with train sleepers is the time they take, but it is a nice way to travel. Seems to be more relaxed, stress free

I prefer to masturbate much earlier - while the train is going through the Bangkok shanties, long before the beds are made up.

Is it compulsary on the trains here ??? aren't there any train slags doing short times ? Captive audiance and that sort of theory bit like Trust House Forty on the motorways ? Could be a real money spinner for a Farang pimp with half a dozen LBFM 's

There are but they're expensive. You have to pay for the first class room on top of the other payment.

Train travel is great (if you're not in a hurry), and 2nd class sleeper the way to go. I plan to get the train from Pattaya to Bkk one day, to check it out.

What???? Since when has second class been cheaper than first?

Sandra and I arrived this morning from Samui and it was great, I loved it - although we didn't do anything exciting because there wasn't much room and we couldn't shower - well we could but the shower room stank of pissy amonia.

Other than that, great ride - lying down to the humming of the fans and the rumble of the diesel engine and the bell tolls at the stations at 4am which is about the time you start t drift off to sleep.

I must make a movie about this.

Yes I enjoy train travel but alas, i seldom have the time and most of my travel is for business. Not like you young Scamp without a care in the world.
Having said that I often go to Pune in india for business and I like to take the train from Mumbai - only about 4 or 5 hours but its great to hang out at the end of the train and watch the slums.
Its at times like that when I miss cigarettes. In fact, probably the only times.....
I also used to do the marathon train journeys when I was living in China - 3 or 4 days non-stop .....

If you're a midget, yes. Full sized people don't fit very well on a sleeper bunk.

If you like travelling by train in Thailand then don't forget that Farangs can buy a 20 day pass for unlimited travel.

If you are travelling from Bangers to Butterworth then getting a Rail Pass for 20 days is even cheaper than buying normal tickets.
