Daewoo is making all kind of stuff, ships for examples, so your comment is rather silly.

I have to disappoint you, there is no sleeper from Pattaya to Bangkok.

I thought Daewoo bought other companies end-of-line stock & basically stuck their badge on it.

I always went 2nd class sleeper upper and never at the end of the carriage when I was travelling alone -- safer. But, if the fan is defective, you never sleep. The dining car is definitely the best place to party, and the journey back to your bed, climbing over sleeping bodies in third class, is very entertaining, especially if you get back after 10pm and the carriage doors are locked.
If you are going to Hualongporn, the station has shower rooms for about Bt20. Great if you arrive at 4 or 5am.
The trains to Nong Khai are trickier -- there used to be two sleepers a night, and one was dismal. No dining car, etc.
But I love Thai trains for the fresh soft sheets and big soft towel blanket that's usually still warm from the dryer. And the attendant always gives you an extra one if you ask nicely.

I try to travel at the back end of the train, and sit with my back facing the destination - that way if there is a serious crash, the worst that will happen is I will spill my Heiniken.

By the way, can you do Phuket/Bkk by sleeper train - also, HAS there ever been a train crash in Thailand?

Quite a few, i think. As i recall, there was one at the start of this year in Hua Hin, and one at the end of last year in Phichit.

Did we ever establish the relevance of the 'one up the shitter' title here?

    Loads of them.

Track doesn't go to Phuket. Surat Thani is the nearest station

Has there ever been a Train crash in Thailand ?

For 6 years - up to 2001- I handled loco claims for both the Thai and Malaysian systems ( they had the same insurers) and got about 3 incidents a month! The majority were locos hitting buffalo, trucks or cattle and most involved derailment. A few were track / maintainance or speed related. Only good thing was that most of both systems had a speed limit of 65 - 75 kph ( on the fast stretches ) and only dealt with 2 fatalities ( both in Malaysia ) in the whole time!
