I'd go bonkers if I had to live like that.

    Oh, I already am.

The great wall is on my bucket list as is the Great Barrier Reef.

    Agree, very nicely put imo

I go back to the UK once a year and go through several stages

    1. Really looking forward it it, yearning for the past
    2. Arriving, remembering why I left the bloody place. I have a sneaking feeling that Brexit is going to magnify this for me,
    3. Coming to the conclusion that I am very lucky to have a job that I enjoy 98% of the time and with the freedom to work in most countries on the planet; life will never be dull.

Seriously, I have nightmares about waking up in some dreary suburban Wimpy home- then I wake up, see the aircon light and feel safe and inwardly mutter 'thank fvck for that!"

Hate to say this, but the worst part is going back to see old friends, and how there lives have never changed, even when they have become successful in whatever they've done.

People all have their own idea of success though. Many of my friends and family haven' t changed, but are living in the same small town, with kids/grandkids etc.. if it makes them happy then who am I to knock them.

^You are by saying that it is the worst part in seeing friends who haven't changed when they become successful. Seemed to be like you were putting them down.

Well who knows. I think about going back mostly because of my future. Future retirement savings and future lifestyle. Mother is now old, single and broke, so I feel like she needs me near.
So you agree with what I say, but I'm putting them down.

Very true, known 3 people who took early retirement from Oz, 2009 GFC wiped out a lot of the private pensions.
When the money ran out they had to return, welfare doesn't cover much, room dog food and baked beans, they topped themselves.

Went back to OZ last year, 7 months told no longer a resident, no welfare for 6 months, wife, 2 kids born in OZ, I couldn't find a job, too old, wife worked in a Thai restaurant, 12 hours a day, 6 days a week and paid $10 an hour.

Kids went to school got their English up, which was good, but we will never return except for a holiday and to see family.
    Not the country I remember.

Your wife was being exploited if she was only getting $10/hour.

Yep, but except the pay or no job, she has PR and got more than the $5 on hour paid to other Thais on student visas.
Everything is off the books, when they make too much money, they were told to close the credit card, EPOS machine down, cash only.

It's going on everywhere, government wants cheap lalor, keep wages down.

Doubt I'll go back to live in the UK. The government doesn'tlike third national wives and making it hard to want to return. A pity as the wife loves the people, very friendly, happy and wanting to chat.

Germany's winter is too cold and too long for us. I don't want to spend 100%in Thailand though. I need a change now and again and that costs money. Quite fancy summer in Germany and winter in Thailand, just need to convince work that it's mutually beneficial.

Moved back to Aus on Jan 1st after living and working in Thailand for 11years.

Aus is a nice country but has changed that much moving back is basically the same as moving to a new country, Iam back in Thailand next week for a job interview as I simply do not like Aus anymore.

Now, is it really that bad?

I haven't had a job since 2002, but to be honest, if I go back I would do a minimum wage job (which is $15 these days). It would be enough with a property paid off. I wouldn't even mind moving to Alberta as I heard that even these days they need schmucks for labor intensive jobs.

It's my wife I'm worried about. Her English really stinks, yet thanks to Thai protectionist laws she has a very good job due to he "English" where in any other normal country they would hire a Bulgarian to do her tasks.
