    Eleven.

To mean five he would have to say what are you doing this weekend.

I might be wrong but it means in 11 days. I usually confuse this shit.

If I want to meet someone in 5 days (as in your case), I would say "see you this coming weekend".

Fucking non native English speaker that I am.

5 days. If you get closer to the weekend, then the meaning is not the same and you would say "this weekend."

A simple guide. Assuming it's Monday.

"What are you doing this weekend" points to A
"What are you doing next weekend" points to B
"What are you doing this coming weekend" points to A
"What are you doing after this weekend" points to C
"What are you doing the weekend after this" points to B
"What are you doing the weekend after next" goes off the scale

    Mon
    Tue
    Wed
    Thu
    Fri
    Sat (A)
    Sun
    Mon (C)
    Tue
    Wed
    Thu
    Fri
    Sat (B)

Hope this makes it clear for everyone.

Like Butterfly says, that's the theory. How people use it something else.

Thetters is a native speaker and doesn't agree with the above.

If we change week into something else.

    It is now 7 September.

If I asked you 'What are you doing next summer?' then that should also refer to 2 summers away, correct? But it usually doesn't, because the previous summer is close enough that it would still be your point of reference.

Same thing with talking about weekends on a Monday.

gotta disagree hitman. If spoken on Monday, especially say, Monday morning over the office water cooler, "what are you doing next weekend" refers to the coming weekend. This is so, because it's probably said in the context of "what did you do over the weekend," etc., and by saying next it clearly means the coming weekend.

The same words said later in the week would still result in a question to clarify "this or next"

The week end starts on Friday evening.
The next Friday evening is in 5 days time therefore the next weekend is in 5 days time. Why is there any confusion ?

Edit: Sorry Ned got there first. Great minds think alike.

i'm not a native english speaker. my understanding would be 11. if the guy ask about next weekend, it just simply means "next" to me, not this coming weekend.

even for thai, we run into similar problem.

i's explaining the way coming to my place to a friend who's not acquainted to bangkok. he's got to drive through viphavadee road and to make a u-turn. i said in thai, direct translate would be "stay outer lane, you'd meet a bridge. make a u-turn there". 2 hours later i didn't see his shadow. i called, he pissed and barked "you told me to stay outer, i did and now i'm on the expressway and no way gonna be able to turn back to your place!".

my understanding of outer and his understanding of outer is evidently different. we both speak the same language. from then we invent our own term by using the word "bread" and "ham" to keep us in the same tune when we run to this kind of situation. you know how unorganized bangkok roads are..........

People are mistaking context for time.

I had a butchers at Google to find something definite & all there is are arguments as to what is correct. This is one from a couple of years ago & they are probably still debating it today.

Mass confusion here in the lounge room.
1/2 bottle spirits too many beers to count,
disagreements on the concept oF next weekend and bets laid and by agreement instead of aussie thing we are throwing it up for international debate.
    bets for beers are serious.
To an Aussie anyway Especially if free
