Edinburgh was serviced by horse and cart milk deliveries, the last one stopped in 1985
I loved that old Clydesdale horse "Hector" that serviced Fountainbridge.

Sean Connery worked as a milkman in Edinburgh on a horse and cart in the 50's
(The milk was shaken but never stirred)
I remember the last early morning the horse and cart came along Warrender Park Terrace. My flatmate and i stayed up to go and say goodbye to him!! I had a room at the front and loved to hear him clopping along!! They retired them well, to a place where they could paddle in the sea!!

Just out of curiousity, did you have home milk delivery where you are from? The days of milk in glass bottles. I guess it's still possible in larger cities with these online grocery delivery outfits. But that's a completely different animal from what I remember as a kid.
Yep I'm so ancient it was delivered by horse and chariot in Ireland (well nag and trap) In London the had silent electric Milk "floats' like golf mobiles the Milkman had boys to speed up delivery and had a small range of extras!,Last saw one about 20 years ago, Wellingto NZ met Mary in the Dairy bit that's NSFW
Delivery by milk float is still standard over most of the UK. I see them out delivering dairy products to houses every morning.

I was brought up in Central Dublin and I also remember milk being delivered by horse and cart, coal too. All the streets in our area were still cobbled. The main Dublin cattle market was just up the road from us and we'd often be woken up by cattlemen herding their beasts up our street on the way to market, not a problem as nobody on the street owned a car.

Other things I remember, mostly Irish specific, old ladies sending kids to the shop for a naggin of whiskey, two and two bars, miraculous medals, gur cakes, peggy's leg, unjailed Christian Brothers, a non-Chinese Moore Street, Rosary and Corpus Christi processions, the Dandelion Market, Summerhill, proper slum tenements, clove rock, etc etc etc.

My grandparents put out their small dairyfarm's milk output in these:

The milk cans were stored in a "milkhouse" in a big concrete bathtub looking thing with large blocks of ice to keep the water cold until the milk truck came for pickup.

    Those were the days...

I was lured by the rocking horse,
    Sweets and the bualadh bos,
Fifty wild boys to a room.
Sing lámh, lámh eile, the dish ran away with the spoon.
Black shoes and stockings for those who say don’t.
    Blue is the colour outside.
    God made the world,
The snake tempted Eve and she died.
Wild Christian Brothers sharpening their leathers,
Learn it by heart, that’s the rule.
All I remember is dreading September and school.

    CHORUS
And they made me for better or worse,
The fool that I am or the wise man I’ll be.
And they gave me their blessings or curse.
It wasn’t their fault I was me …
Not the one that you see.

The priest in confession condemns my obsession,
With thoughts that I do not invite.
    I mumble and stutter,
    He slams down the shutter,
Goodnight – (Good night to you too, Father!)
    Stainless as steel,
Lord, you know how I feel,
Someone shoot me while my soul is clear.
    I don’t think I’ll last,
But my vow to abstain was sincere.
    Arch-confraternity men to the fight,
Raise up your banners on high.
    Searching for grace,
    Securing my place,
    When I die.

    CHORUS

Oh God, he kept a very close eye on me,
Hung round my bed in the darkness, he spied on me,
Caught me in the long grass so often, he died on me….

Ballrooms of romance in Salthill or Mallow,
I stood like John Wayne by the wall,
Lined up like cattle, we wait to do battle and fall.
You can’t wine and dine her in an old Morris Minor,
So ask her before it’s too late.
I danced on girls’ toes – accepted rejection as my fate.
Drink was my saviour, it made me much braver,
But I couldn’t hold it too well.
I slipped on the coach and ruined my approach as I fell.

    CHORUS

My first (driveable) car, in 1981, was a 1951 Humber Hawk, in great condition. $500 well spent.

I left it with a mate to go back to Fiji and it ended up in the demolition derby. Bastard!

The British. A people who invaded half the world, subjugated and enslaved local populations, exploited their resources, bragged about how Britain was so great, how much better and superior English culture and way of life was... and then got mad when those people followed them home.

Haven't come across a bigger bunch of whinging wankers yet.

I realize none of these compare to Pla Raaa or tying a bag of Offal with an elastic band with 32 loops in a trice.
