"Farang" a Dirty Word?

Being a middle class, middle aged Englishman I May be guilty of being overly racially aware but "farang" while not a direct racial slur the entamology of the word and its meaning in contiguous nation's native tongue "barang","farangee" is overtly racist.The frequency with which the word is used irritates me greatly, although I sometimes make referrence to myself by using the term especially when highlighting to educated Thais their moronic use of the word "farang ruu mak mai dee"

I didn't actualy realise smeg was such an icon here back in my day smeg was primarily an -ajarn/this one nice chap from ajarn whom smeg believed was a TEFL course shill who had bilked or cheated smeg in some way- phenomenon.

"Farang" originates from the sino-khmer phrase"far oo pa la a ba boop bap a lu la orang" meaning "hey you rotund pasty skinned geriatric build me a house and give me some money for having sex with your wife". It is an expression of affection and respect. Its earliest use is in the 21st Century Mon epic "Khun Hoy Khun Gluay" in which the protagonist Dominic meets his ambiguously endowed future wife Nit in the mythical "Town of Boys" somewhere on Thailand's Eastern coast and embarks on a quest to find the mystic city of Nakorn Bournemouth by means of taking selfies in every public toilet mentioned in the Vesantara Jataka.

Hmm I agree Thailand is becoming a well developed, industrialised OECD league (military dictatorship...) Bangkok is a clean, low crime, world class city.The days,if they ever existed, of defrauding Nam veterans and sex tourists as a major factor in the Thai economy are past.BTW if you suspect a case of convert patriotism or maronic nationalism: I'm not Thai nor is my wife infact I often ponder why I've only ever made one lifelong Thai friend. (yes,people think I'm smeg and smelling of acrid pee could be contributing factor.

Regarding the saying "farang ruu mak mai dee" I must confess I actually read it on a Thai ex-pat forum. However I'm pretty sure it is a Thai saying as repeating it too educated Thai speakers ellicits a look of recognition and sometimes repetition akin to saying "all work and no play makes Jack a...." to a native speaker and having this met with "all work and..."
