    NB.

These words may have huge social consequences, especially when uttered by expats in Thailand.

I thought French and English were competing for that status until, perhaps, Indochina became independent - in the 1970s.

French was the international language of diplomacy while English was the international language of commerce. Guess which one was more important. The British Empire was the largest commercial empire the world has ever seen and pretty much everywhere you went in the world there was likely to be at least an imperial trading post. These days people do learn English so they can go to or trade with the USA but it's been the most important international language since long before the USA was a powerful player on the world stage.

^And a fair percentage of that list had some colonisation or early trade history with the UK, not the USA.

Yes, that was my point. They're almost all ex-colonies.

hehe makes it all the more fun to use it. Nothing like a good "ibid" or the occasional "proximo" or "ultimo" in a letter to make an official feel dumb.

Do we have to explain i.e. too?

It can be anything, depend on where you are using it methinks.
In the meeting we talked about ...2.5" NB product... so what should it be? We are HDD manufacturer so it's 2.5" Notebook product for sure.

It may come as a surprise for you and your work mates but those 2.5" HDD's are used in soo many other applications than notebooks

Why don't you just call them for what they are, 2.5" HDD?
