I think every one knows whats coming, and the uncertainty of how people will react is a bit of a worry.
The military jumped the gun last year and they have now had to extend their stay in power.
That is causing more problems as the country sinks further under the incompetence of their inept decision making process. Every day he lose his temper and over reacts brings the nadir closer.

Think I will pick up some shirts and strides from the tailors and book meself in for a colonic.

But, but, what does that mean?

The stock market goes 'tits-up'. Inflation eats up your savings so that's the definition of 'tits-up'?

This is a 20th century phrase, probably of military origin. There's certainly no mention of it in print prior to WWII. It has been suggested that the term derives from the behaviour of aeroplanes' altitude indicators, which turn upside down when faulty and display an inverted 'W' resembling a pair of breasts. There's no real evidence to support this speculation and it seems more likely that the phrase is just a vulgar alternative to the earlier 'belly-up', which has the same meaning.

'Belly-up' is an allusion to fish, which float that way when 'dead in the water'. This expression was known in the USA by the 1920s, often related to bancruptcy or other commercial disasters...

    -There ya go...

Yea,,,after watching the TV series "Walking Dead"...I realized how inadequate my firepower is to stop them....and the BIB have been holding up the paperwork to let me bring it up to standard.

If everything went 'tits up' for me, (hotels burnt down, Phuket Airport relocated etc), I certainly would not return to the UK, where the opportunity to stack shelves in Tesco is all that would be available for a 'professional' 55-year old.

I'd probably get back into teaching (if the schools would have me), but back in Myanmar, Laos or Cambodia.

Even if everything doesn't go tits up, I'd like to do a few more years of teaching again in Myanmar. But that would require my ex #2 to look after my hotel, which would really be the equivalent of everything going tits up anyway

    Chas,
    Interesting thread/subject if taken seriously.

I’ve been in and out of Thailand for close to 30 years. Pretty much the entire time has been one of uncertainty. This, that or the other thing provides the uncertainty. In my experience, Thailand has never been stable.

And, it did go "tits-up" on me in the late nineties when the Asian financial crisis hit. Money dried up and all hell broke loose. Factories of Thais going to work on payday, end-of-month and being told we don’t have any money to pay you. Not a happy time in Thailand. Basically, I had to leave, no money, no work, gave my girlfriend (now my wife) the option to join me in the USA. Had to hang around Thailand for approximately six months for her immigration visa paperwork to clear. Not a fun time.

Political instability. In my experience it is status quo in Thailand. Votes of no confidence, coups, elections, seem to always be on the near horizon. I have always been, and will always be, ready to leave on a moments notice and I will always be registered with, and dependent upon, my Embassy to evacuate me and my wife (USA permanent resident), should the need arise.

As far as a formal backup plan – I keep my money offshore, will not buy any valuable property in Thailand – i.e. I’ll only purchase what I am willing to leave behind or lose.

Now, I am also dependent upon my extended Thai family to provide me with shelter and protection. If the fit hits the shan, it will be up to my Thai family and the US military to save my bacon. Also can't discount divine intervention. Of course, on a personal note, my bucket list is empty, there is nothing that I want to do that I have not done. So, if my numbers up – so be it.

God forbid Thailand ever goes through what happened in Indonesia when the Suharto regime collapsed.

    Unhappy another perspective

"Tit's up"...when the country you reside in seriously comes for you.

Think Mao, Khmer Rouge , Stalin , Hitler, Tutsis /Hutus , Sri Lanka/ Tamils , fundamentalist Sunni/ fundamentalist Shi'ia , Zimbabwee, Rhodesia, Uganda, etc.

That's some serious Tit's up...and that my friend is what, where and when one should have a very quick exit Plan B firmly ingrained...you need not dwell on the possibility - but never deny that it exists.

Once the bombs start exploding and the rivers have bodies floating - MOVE quickly brothers...
presently I do not feel any iota of this type of vibe in Thailand.

[Though I won't deny that the Thai roads/ highways/vehicle operators are killers...mostly at night or while driving in inclement weather.]

Very interesting reply Bowie, thanks for that. I agree on the default instability issue. I arrived shortly after the airport occupation in 2008. No wonder flights were cheap.
I honestly believe the present government is trying to engineer a highly controversial issue over which they have little control. The outcome is unpredictable, as is the aftermath. I referred earlier to the natural resilience of the Thai and while this may ameliorate the impact, I suspect the national outpouring of grief will be off the Richter scale.

As you seem to inhabit a different part of the galaxy to everyone else, you and your posts become increasingly irrelevant. When I want your opinion, I'll give it to you.

I should imagine that in your case the irrigation session would be quite a long one.

I think I would book the Oriental for my parting weekend thus ensuring my last memory of the place was a pleasant one. Drinking a rather nice Chardonnay, gazing upon the Chaopraya at sunset from the Terrace and surrounded by competent skivvies, would be a most agreeable epilogue.

But bombs have been exploding, and not just in the south where what, 5000 are dead over the last 7 years? It's like Iraq, maybe worse.

And today, how many people are being held secretly, tortured, disappeared at this very moment? This kind of stuff in the past sometimes took decades to see the light of day, with the internet, maybe we'll know sooner.

The only thing that saves Thailand from all out civil war is the complacency of the citizens who, in the past had limited information available to them. But now they know a lot more about how in the dark they are kept. They are the clear majority, too despite fixed up polls made in Bangkok Hi So shopping malls.

This junta mean to hold on to power, and they absolutely must control information. I see a day very, very soon when the nation is as isolated as N Korea.

Shit hits fan and sooner rather than later. Get out now while the getting is good.

I think you are exaggerating a little - but I agree that the risk of a civil war is still there.
For that reason - combined with the fact that I was fed up with Thailand - I am now observing from across the river

Revolution is always a possibility when the masses become tired of empty promises from their government. I am sure this will not happen in Thailand where all the 6 oclock speeches on the TV will be followed through to completion and the masses will be very happy with their new and better country.

If you believe the above, I have some rice land I would like to sell you. It reminds me of all the campaign promises that never came to fruition over the last 50 years in the US.

Governments are always worried about the masses uprising and will either use rhetoric or violence to quell this unrest. This has been seen throughout history and is occuring now in many countries. The amount of time a government can keep the masses at bay has a lot to do with how well they have brainwashed everyone. The western countries seem to have this down to a science. How long before this country finally catches on to what is really happening will depend on the mentality and tolerance level of its inhabitants.

According to The Nation more than 20,000 people die annually in road fatalities.
That should be a concern for all.

Sure the Thai Army vs Muslim insurgency in the South has been an ongoing concern , though apparently I personally do not perceive the same Iraq scenario of violence as you suggest.
I definitely do not see the ostracizing of Thailand by the West.

Yorlov, maybe it's time for one of us to get new bifocals ?
