    Too Fat To Work

Don't want to be a productive member of society? Well, all you have to do in Old Blighty is eat like a pig and get too fat to work:

"A kebab-loving couple declared too fat to work are raking in £2k a month in welfare handouts from the British taxpayer. Stephen Beer and Michelle Coomb, from Plymouth, weigh a total of 55 stone and claim their size makes it impossible to find a job."

Their “£3k wedding, paid for through their housing benefit payments” at which “guests were treated to £450 worth of kebabs” was featured in a recent Channel 5 documentary. Mr. Beer has been married four times previously.

Both are on Disability Living Allowance because of their size, and Beer travels around in a specially modified scooter built for obese people. He has taxpayer funded carers to help him wash and dress because he cannot stand up for long periods.

Whilst 31-stone Beer has not worked in five years, his 24-stone wife has never had a job at all.

The Beers are not the first to be fork-lifted aboard the gravy train.

The couple are part of the forty percent of British people who are either overweight or obese. They are also amongst the 5,500 people who claim benefits due to being too fat, a figure that has doubled in the last five years."

    Forty percent???

and even if the lazy fat cunnts can be bothered to find a job, they will now be treated as if disabled.

a bigger insult to the genuinely disabled i have yet to encounter.

By Kellan Howell - The Washington Times - Saturday, December 20, 2014

Europe’s highest court ruled obesity “can constitute a disability” under the European Union’s equality at work legislation, meaning that European employers must treat overweight workers as “disabled.”

Under the Employment Equality Directive, bosses must provide obese employees with larger seats, special parking spaces and other facilities to accommodate their “disability.”

“While no general principle of EU law prohibits, in itself, discrimination on grounds of obesity, that condition falls within the concept of ‘disability’ where, under particular conditions, it hinders the full and effective participation of the person concerned in professional life on an equal basis with other workers,” the European Court of Justice ruled, the Telegraph reported.

The court also said that the cause of someone’s obesity is irrelevant, even if someone’s excessive weight is brought on by gross overeating.

“The directive has the object of implementing equal treatment and aims in particular to enable a person with a disability to have access to or participate in employment. In addition, it would run counter to the aim of the directive if its application was dependent on the origin of the disability,” the court ruled.

The EU did not define what level of Body Mass Index was required to consider an employee disabled by obesity.

The ruling comes after a law suit brought by Karstel Kaltoft, a Danish nanny, who claimed he was laid off by his employer because he was obese.

The Danish local authority that Mr. Kaltoft worked for reportedly fired him on allegations that the man was so overweight he needed help from a colleague to tie children’s shoelaces.

Mr. Kaltoft, who now works as a truck driver, saw the court’s decision as a victory over his former employer.

“It is good that we now recognize that obesity can be a handicap, and I hope that municipality realize that is was not okay to fire me,” he said, the Telegraph reported.

“I never saw it as a requirement that I needed to lose weight and never had a feeling that it could cost me the job,” Mr. Kaltoft said.

The court’s ruling in Mr. Kaltoft’s case could hurt European employers who now have to bear the costs to make adjustments for obese staff.

“This test could mean that businesses face claims from obese staff for failing to make reasonable adjustments to their role if the job entails tasks where they would be on an unequal footing with other staff — tasks that require full mobility such as stacking shelves in a supermarket for example,” said Julian Hemming, employment partner at law firm Osborne Clarke, the Telegraph reported.

And yet you mock Michelle Obama's campaign to try to get kids to eat a healthy diet?

Obesity is such a problem in the States that the military is having trouble meeting recruiting targets because applicants are too fat to join up!

Australia recently waddled past USA as the fattest nation on Earth, the obesity problem isn't limited to a couple of corpulent bludgers in the UK...

Unless there's an insurmountable genetic cause for a person's obesity, I have no sympathy for those who are disabled as a result of being grossly overweight.

Most people in the developed world eat far too much out of habit and boredom.

The same people exercise far too little to utilize the energy they consume.

In other words, these folks are a waste of time, space and energy.

Those disabled by the condition ought to be left to starve or shift themselves, and instead of increasing their social welfare payments and giving them mobility scooters, they should receive less support and indeed be fined for not reducing weight through properly adjusted diets and exercise.

I've seen dozens of obese people lose weight, regain mobility and give up unhealthy diets and lifestyles that obesity fosters, which include alcohol, drug and tobacco dependency.

Doctors should be handing out Vit B3 and exercise regimens instead of drugs and band-aid fixes that only side-line the real causes of obesity.

Unless there's an insurmountable genetic cause for a person's obesity,
its me glands, according to Peter Cook.

On learning Elizabeth Taylor’s glands were behind her weight issues:

“Poor woman. There she is, in her suite in the Dorchester, harmlessly watching television.

Suddenly her glands pick up the phone and order two dozen éclairs and a bottle of brandy.

‘No,’ she screams, ‘please, I beg you!’

But her glands take no notice.

Determined glands they are, her glands.

You’ve never known glands like them. The trolley arrives and Elizabeth Taylor hides in the bathroom, but her glands, her glands take the éclairs, smash down the door and stuff them down her throat.

I’m glad I haven’t got glands like that. Terrible glands.”

America - 33% men and 36% women are obese.
Australia - 25.5% men, 23.4% women are obese.

^^ I don't see any numbers from quimby,

however, I can't imagine Australia's figures have increased by 8% for men and 13% for women while America's have not altered one bit since 2007.

Beg pardon for my absence, real life intruded and I had to go to the immigration office so be warned: I am feeling stabby now!

I do remember reading that Aus had eked past the US, it was a little while ago. Here's a couple of links that kind of agree:
    The Age, June 2008:
Australia has become the fattest nation in the world, with more than 9 million adults now rated as obese or overweight, according to an alarming new report.
The most definitive picture of the national obesity crisis to date has found that Australians now outweigh Americans and face a future "fat bomb" that could cause 123,000 premature deaths over the next two decades.

    More recently ABC, May 2014:
Obesity rates in Australia are climbing faster than anywhere else in the world, according to a new study.
The results of the global study into obesity rates, published in the medical journal The Lancet, show almost a quarter of the country's children and 63 per cent of the adult population is overweight.
Australia's obesity levels are now on par with the United States, but slightly less than New Zealand.

But it is really by the by. The point I was trying to make is that obesity is a problem all over the place, developing and developed nations alike. The 2 fat cnuts in the OP make good TV but they aren't worth snot in the bigger picture.

I think you are right about that, but it also misses a point: the amount of energy in food has risen astronomically so even if we eat the same amount pound for pound as our ancestors we consume far more calories because of the processing of modern foods.

This increase of energy density means that we consume more than enough calories for our needs before our bodies trip the "I'm not hungry anymore" button.
