    I don't care.

I doubted the bit in your story where you said you wouldn't be allowed to leave Thailand without paying for that window.

The only way they could stop you is to arrest and imprison you. Hardly likely.

I received an email from the hotel. We are down to 15,000 Baht now. What a joke. The manager's secretary said that I must have misheard 15,000 as 50,000. Thing is, it was written down, not told to me. Daft moo.

Within 12 hours of you sending an email to a Thai organisation you received a reply?

    Dear Mr. Richard xxxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for your e-mail and sorry for any inconvenience occured to you. Since we have found out the security report about the broken glass door on Saturday 9th June 2007, our security guard tried to contact you so that we can discuss for the damage charge and I'm strongly confident that we are in miscommunication for the cost, which is 15,000.- Baht not 50,000.- Baht.

Mr. Richard, it would be appreciated if you can come to see our Chief Security, Khun xxxxxxx to work out for the solution in this case by today. Kindly let me know for the time that will be fine for you so that I will coordinate with Chief Security.

Again sorry for your inconvenience but hope you will understand.

    Best Regards,

    xxxxxx xxxxxxxxx
    Secretary to General Manager

    The email I sent

    To the manager, xxxxxxxxxx Hotel.

This email has been sent to three email addresses. Please pass to the MANAGER immediately

    Manager,

I would like to know why your security staff came to my home at xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx yesterday morning to harrass me and force me from my apartment, obtain a copy of my work permit, and demand 50,000 Baht from me for a piece of glass in a door.

I would like to know your reasons, and where the figure of 50,000 Baht for a piece of glass comes from. I know that door glass costs about 2000 Baht.

If your staff come to my home to harrass me again, I will contact the police and file a serious complaint. I will also ensure that this harrassment is made public on all hotel information websites on the internet so that your customers everywhere in the world know about it.

If you wish to communicate with me about this further, you can contact me by this email only, today or any time.

    My reply email

    Dear Khun xxxxxx,

    Thank you for your email.

I am not willing to meet with your chief of security again. He spoke to me very unpleasantly at my home. I will meet with another member of staff, but I will not be available until about 5pm today.

Please tell me why you believe I am responsible for the damage to your glass. Do you have this on cctv camera? I would like to see that.
Please tell me how a piece of glass can cost 15,000 Baht. That is impossible.
Please tell me why your security chief had 50,000 Baht written on a security report.
Please tell me why your security chief said it was a police report, but it did not have any police stamp or information on it. I believe that your security chief was trying to trick my money from me.

The doors in your hotel and very old, the glass must be very weak if it can break easily, and when they are locked they are dangerous because they are not locked properly. A chain is used. Did you know that? If a child ran into one of your doors, they could be killed.

If you are trying to charge someone for new glass, you should consider the age and how dangerous the old doors are. The hotel should have replaced them with safe glass and proper locks many years ago.

they would have done, but its not easy to get hold of the 15,000 baht required to upgrade them - until you came along

They can kiss my arse. Firstly, exactly 50,000. Now exactly 15000. They are either pulling these numbers out of the air (because of the exactness of them) or they are a set charge they impose on hotel guests. I am not a guest and I have no contract with them for them to rely on to charge these stupid prices.

I have been to check. Glass has been replaced already. Old door frame used.

well look on the bright side - the 50k is already 15k.

if you get the police involved and demand to see the bill for replacing the glass you will probably get it down to the real price

I'm aiming to pay nothing. There is no cctv camera that I can see. If they can show me a video of me wrecklessly breaking their property, which they can't, I'll hand over something, but not 15,000

I am now communicating with top management, not the security monkeys. Their scam failed. I'm sure it was a scam.

They dont need to, they know you broke it, whether it was wreckless or not is irrelevant, you broke their door and you are liable for it.

How do you come to that conclusion?

The glass must have been loose or cracked already to fall out of the door like that.
The door was locked with a chain which caused a jolt after the door opened part way. That is no way to lock a door.
It is their word against mine. The one security guard was asleep. Of course, they will say that several guards saw the incident. They have already admitted in subsequent email exchanges that there is no cctv footage, hence that was a lie.
They are trying it on. They are opperuntistic little bastards who want other people to pay for everything.
